(toe-Miwtte Editorial . j Dear Candidate: i If you are successful in your quest j for public office, we would like to | offer some advice as to what we expect | from you as our representative. True, ; your pay will in no way compen | sate you if you faithfully fulfill | your duties. But, after all. you sought | the office, it didn't seek you. ' First, we expect you to attend all the meetings. The exception is if you have died. If you chose another reason to miss, your carefully considered proxy vote should be given to someone. It's unforgiv able for you to skip a meeting because you are afraid to vote on an issue. We don’t need a jellyfish sitting in your seat deciding things that will affect our lives. You’re obligated to study every item presented for your consider ation. This doesn't mean a quick briefing before the meeting nor being a "yes" man for the bureaucrats running the departments. It means homework and legwork in the field, talking with the people who will be affected by your decision. Your research will probably lead you to make unpopular decisions. Make sure you thoroughly study the issues and your facts did not come from people who have a vested interest in the projects. Never underestimate the intelli gence of the average citizen If you take the time and effort and base your decision on facts you have gathered, not everyone will agree with you but you will be able to clearly explain your stand on the issue. This won’t please everyone but they will respect you. Understand, as an elected official, you have not been endowed with any special intelligence. You will make mistakes but please try to be a statesman and have enough integri ty to stand up and say, "I made a mistake and I will correct it. "You’ll be standing alone but we promise you’ll be standing head and Saturday, Aug. 31 Cool Springs Ruritan Club will sponsor an Antique Tractor Pull, 7 p.m. Directions from Statesville take I-40 to Exit 154 and go 8 miles on Old Mocksville Road to Pull Site or from 901 go 6 miles on Old Mocksville Road to Pull Site. Bring your lawn chair. Free admission. Saturday, Aug. 31 The children at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church will be selling grilled hot dogs and drinks for a dollar each and chips for 50c in front of Bi-Lo, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. All money received ♦ * fcK*'* * * ***** * fc*‘»‘#* shoulders above all the others. • ' •• . •: •• We've got a little time before the up- i coming elections and this may be a ! good time to consider some of the ! responsibilities we have as citizens. j This will probably bore you to tears ; and may rate right up there with watching grass grow. But, without water the grass won't grow any- j way so you may as well read this If you are too lazy to vote, you do not have a right to voice your opinion. We citizens make the mistake of thinking those who win public office must have some superior wisdom. Maybe, but few ever show it. We're told over and over "I don’t want to get involved." If you expect the people you elect to stand up and be counted, you can’t be a jellyfish either. There’s nothing the city or county can do to you when you speak out on any issues coming before the city council or county commissioners. Remember, we are the bosses. Our officials and public employ ees work for us. If we expect good government, we've got to stand up, hold their hand and look them straight in the eye. Right now both city and county officials are tickled pink you're upset over the flower watering because they think you have forgotten about the $8 million of your money they are throwing away on the Meeting Street library site. This is a good time to say we were wrong thinking all the city coun cil and county commissioners needed was a slap on the wrist when they voted to waste all our money on such a tiny, question able building site. The slap on the wrist hasn’t even got their attention. What they need is a boot out the door and we hear there are a lot of people around town putting on their boots. will go toward Operation Christmas Child. The undersigned citizens and residents of Iredell County and of the City of Statesville, for a number of compelling reasons, are opposed to locating the Iredell County Library upon the site selected at the corner of South Meeting and West Front Streets in the City of Statesville. We hereby petition the two governing bodies to re-open consideration of site selection for said library and to receive additional public input within the context of official public hearings before each body. Since facts now available to the public regarding the selected site were not available at the times of previous public hearings, this procedure is necessary to allow meaningful public input on this important issue.
