COMMUTERS SHOULD BE EXCUSED Mitchell's day students have at least two problems not shared by those in residence; namely, (1) they have to ar range for transportation to and from school every day, and (2) they must drive back to the college for Fine Arts performances. At present, all full-time students have to attend the re quired events. It is, in most cases, a mere five-minute walk for dormitory students; but for day students, much more is in volved. It is not to be overlooked that special allowances have been made for those smdents who are married or have other obliga tions. Some are even excused from convocation meetings. How ever, there are many day students—some commuting from as far as 25 miles away—whose names are still checked by the Fine Arts shows’ roll. We feel that commuting students should not be required to attend Fine Arts presentations. They are at a bad enough disadvantage as it is, considering gasoline fare. And transit time and general inconvenience bring only additional hardships upon nonresidents. If the present policy does remain intact, though, perhaps those involved should request travel expenses.
