VOL. CI, NO. 6 Oxford, North Carolina, June, 1976 ONE DOLLAR A YEAR More Masonic Trail Stops Warrenton & Fayetteville Two more of North Carolina’s oldest lodges were visited on the Masonic Trail last month; Johnston-Caswell Lodge 10 at Warrenton on May 12 and Phoenix Lodge 8 at Fayetteville on May 25. The Masonic Trail was created by the Grand Lodge ’76 Committee as a program of visits to each of the pre-Revolutionary lodges during the Bicentennial Year. Earlier visits were to the old lodges at New Bern, Wilmington, Eden ton, and Halifax. On June 26 the Trail will be at Charity Lodge 5 in Windsor and a Fall visit is scheduled to St. John’s 4 at Kinston. The date for the visit to the ninth lodge on the Trail, Fulton 99 at Salisbury, has not yet been scheduled. The first four visits were made during the administration of Grand Mas ter S. Frank Noble, Jr., while the May visits and those to follow are being made during the administration of Grand Master Leslie H. Garner. Dr. Eddie P. Stiles (DDGM-26) delivered the Bicentennial Oration at both Warrenton and Fayetteville, pointing out this was a year for looking back and looking forward. He said that just as Masonic patriots reflexly wrote Masonic teachings into our earliest documents so should we reflexly incorporate Masonic teachings into our lives and actions. Noting our greatest opportunity is to teach morality to youth, he said DeMolay and Rainbow are readily available to Masons for that purpose. The meetings at both locations were opened by the Masters; Horace Shearin at Warrenton and Carlton Mercer at Fayetteville. Distin guished guests were introduced by Past Mas ter Hoyt Randall at Fayetteville and by Past Master Ed Rooker at Warrenton. Past Grand Master Robert L. Pugh, Chairman of the Grand Lodge ’76 Committee, presided over each meeting. He was assisted by Grand Mar shal Nelson Banks at Fayetteville. Grand Master Garner spoke briefly to each gathering and presented proclamations on each occasion, those being read by Grand Sec retary Robert P. Dudley at Warrenton and by Junior Grand Warden William B. Bellois at Fayetteville. Again, as at all previous Trail visits, the meetings were enlivened with the presentation of fine music. Ruth Ann Draughorn, an active Grand Master Garner Horace Shearin, M-10 Carlton Mercer, M-8 Rainbow Girl, sang and played the autoharp at Fayetteville. At Warrenton Past Master Jack Harris and Mrs. Dorothy Roberts sang, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. G. W. King. J. Edward Allen, North Carolina’s senior Past Grand Master, presented the history of Johnston-Caswell Lodge and Thomas Olsen, Lodge Bicentennial Chairman, gave the his tory of Phoenix Lodge. Past Grand Master G. Dudley Humphrey introduced the speaker at Fayetteville and Past Grand Master Pugh did this at Warren ton. Prayers were offered at Warrenton by Rev. Elton Cook and at Fayetteville by Rev. Joseph Cooper. Out of town guests of the Warrenton meet ing were entertained by Past Grand Master Allen in his home prior to the dinner and program at the Lions’ Den. There were a number of ladies and other guests with the Masons on hand to witness the ancient ceremony. Johnston-Caswell is one of North Carolina’s nine pre-Revolutionary lodges and one of its distinguished members, J. Edward Allen, is our senior Past Grand Master, having served as Grand Master in 1939. May 12 was an eventful day for the lodge. Not only was the cornerstone laid for the new building, the lodge was visited that evening by the Masonic Trail (see article front page) and many of those present for the corner- stone ceremony were also in attendance for the evening meeting.
