Aces Have Difficult Tune Turning Back Roanoke Rapids 6-0 Game Marred By Many Fumbles By Both Teams Though favored to win by at least two* or three touchdowns, Edenton’s Aces were hard pressed on Hicks Field Friday night to eke out a 6-0 decision over the Roanoke Rapids High School. The winning touchdown was the result of a ten-yard pass from Duck Griffin, a reserve back, to Earl Goodwin,'which was flipped near the end of the first half. Griffin suffered an injured collar bone at this stage of the game. The Aces were considerably off col or. A number of times, fumbles cost them what should have been at least two or snore touchdowns. The Aces kicked to begin the game, but after three plays the visitors were forced to kick due to not making much yardage despite a five yard penalty against the Aces. The kick was par- ; tially blocked oy Wright and Emmini zer with the Aces getting possession of the ball on the visitors’ 33-yard line. Goodwin fumbled and Roa.ioke Rapids recovered on their own 35. During the remainder of the quarter the ball see-sawed back and forth with the Aces chalking up three first downs and Roanoke Rapids one. As the quarter ended Lane picked up two yards and Goodwin gained seven yards, with the ball on the 10-yard line. On the first play Goodwin made a first down with the ball on the 8-yard line, but on the next play Lane fum bled and Roanoke Rapids recovered on their own 18. The Aces held and the visitors kicked to the 42. Lane again fumbled, losing 10 yards. After an incomplete pass the Aces kicked, and after three plays the visitors kicked. The Aces lost the ball after Frank Hughes picked up 6 yards and Lane 3, but then Hughes fumbled and re covered and Lane was thrown for a loss Roanoke Rapids kicked, after three plays netted a six yard loss. Edenton was penalized five yards and after Goodwin gained three yards, he next passed to Lane for a first down, taking the baH on the visitors 22-yard line. With time rapidly running out the Aces resorted to passing. Another pass to Lane was good for six yards. Goodwin bulled his way through the line for six yards and Lane made it a first down with the ball on the Roa noke Rapids 10-yard line. From this point Griffin flipped a pass to Good win which connected for what was the only touchdown of the game. Gene Taylor’s kick for the extra point was good, but the piny was called back due to illegal position, and on the next try the ball went wide. Roanoke Rapids kicked to start the second half, and in this quarter the visitors made their biggest threat. They registered their first downs and at one time were knocking for a touchdown on the Edenton 8-yard line, but on three plays the Aces backed them back to the 22-yard line. Af ter Lane and Goodwin netted only five yards, Taylor kicked to midfield, but were unable to make much head way. At the start of the fourth quarter Goodwin picked up three yards and Privott two after which Hughes went for a first down. Privott then made a first down and Goodwin got loose for a good run, but fumbled when he was tackled. Roanoke Rapids gained possession of the ball. on the 37-yard line, but made two successive fumbles which were recovered. A pass then clicked for a first down. The visitors again resorted to the air, but no gain was accomplished. Gray intercepted a pass in the final seconds and after Privott gained seven yards in two plays the game ended. A? usual, Earl Goodwin played a good game, while Frank Hughes truned in his best performance of the season. Lane and Privott also looked good on offense, while Earl Min shew and Keith Emminizer led de fensively for the Aces. Calvin Bat ton was the nost outstanding Roa noke Rapids player. The Aces made 10 first downs and Roanoke Rapids eight. glHmm Q j Senior Class News | db a By NANCY BOSWELL Tuesday the Seniors will take a trip to the State Fair. Mr. and Mrs. N. J. George will chaperon this group of wide-awake Seniors. One or two might not go, but naturally they’ll wish they had because the Seniors are out for a gay day. Even though they must rise early Tuesday morn ing, they don’t mind for this will be the first trip to the State Fair for many of the Seniors. The fair is open from October 18 through the 22nd. Arrangement of pictures and activi ties of the high school for “The Eden tonian’ 1 will begin soon. In fact some ideas are already being suggested to the annual staff. The Seniors are striving for an even better annual than the 1948 edition of “The Eden tonian.” This they know means work, hard work, but with the cooperation they have shown thus far it can he done! The Seniors have made quite a profit on football concessions this year due to both the weather, determina tion of the students, and the fact that Edencon had a very pleasing schedule for the ’49 season. They will continue selling concessions at the football games. A profit has been made on the after- THE CHOWAN HEfeALD, EDENTON, N. The demonstration was conducted in Ray Hollowell’s woods just back of his home at Cross Roads, near Chowan High School. I Several Chowan 4-H boys intend to carry on a forestry project this year. Several club members were visited last week by Robert Marsh, county agent and shown the proper method of selecting an exhibit for the North 1 Carolina State Fair. Club members expect to have corn, peanuts, cotton, 1 sweet potatoes, and scuppernong grapes on exhibit at the State Fair. Four-H Club members who have an 1 acre of peanuts in the contest are again reminded to be sure to have 1 their peanuts separate from the re ! mainder of the crop, and to save a double handful of peanuts from each bag as they come out of the picker. This sample should be saved exactly ! as the peanuts come from the picker, ' as the sample will be judged by pea ; nut buyers before winners are an ' nounced and prizes are awarded.
