AUGUST 9, 1951 ■■""!— II "HI Garden Time j By ROBERT SCHMIDT ii —■ ,1.0 At this time of year you will be gin to take notice whether or not you have a good crop of grapes on your muscadine vines. If not, why not? Although not always the case, the usual answer to that question is poor pollination. Most muscadine varieties require pollination by a male vine in order to set fruit. Many of the wild mus cadine vines are males and in the past have served as pollinators for the vines planted in the home gardens. However, many wooded and brushland areas have been put into cultivation and in doing so the male muscadines have been destroyed, and now the garden varieties are not producing good crops. I saw a good illustration of this] last week. A large James grapej which formerly produced good crops' has only a scattering of grapes on it. However, three young vines propagated from this one and planted in another garden along with some perfect flowered pollinators have a heavy crop of grapes on them this year. This goes to show how im portant pollination is for your scup-; pernongs and muscadines. During the past few years several) 1 flowered varieties of muscadines have been offered for sale. They were de i veloped at the N. C. Lower Coastal ' Plain by Charles Dearing. These varieties will produce crops : without the presence of male vines ■ and also will take the place of male vines in pollinating other varieties. ; Since the male vines produce no s grapes, it is a distinct advantage to . use one of these perfect flowered va -1 rieties for pollination. Why use the i old varieties at all? Because they are better quality? Watch for him . . . obey his signals . .• . and your driving in the down town area will be easier, less tiring. Be alert for traffic officers at all busy intersections, respect his di rections, respect all traffic laws he represents! Alertness Is Your Best Defense Against Traffic Accidents. It isn’t the right-of-way that counts . . . it’s the right way! If every driver and every walker would have remembered that warn ing, the traffic accident record wouldn’t tell us that many have been killed, or injured on our streets and highways! The tragedy is this: Most acci dents are caused; and therefore, could have been avoided. All of us, every walker and every driver, must do our share to remove the causes of traf fic accidents before they result in death and destruction. Whenever you are in traffic . . . whenever there’s the slightest doubt, always give the other fellow a break. Remember: Be Careful, The Life You Save May j Be Your Own!
