But politics be ing what is, unpredictable and fickle, he could also get the hand instead of foot. President Johnson has said that he would do ANYTHING to bring peace to Vietnam, anything to bring the Viet Cong to the negotiation table. All right, then, if we are will ing to do anything, let’s try stopping the bombing and see what happens. North Viet Nam seems adamant on this point—we must stop the bombing before any peace talks can take place. In my opin ion, it’s worth at least a try. Valentine’s Day seems to me to be a misplaced holi day. Just As Just as a young man be gins feeling his oats he seems to start sowing some wild ones. Miami Herald. .N HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1968. Let’s Go To Church Sunday SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON LIFE’S HUNGER SATISFIED International Sunday School Lesson for Feb. 11 Memory Selection: “I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.— John 6:35. Lesson Text: John 6. In our “humanoid” form, as a popular tele vision show puts it, we are subject to many hungers—the hunger for love, the hunger for food, the hunger for warmth. Our lesson today relates to a different, far more important kind of hunger; spiritual hung er. For Jesus gives himself as the Bread of life to all who will accept Him. And those who thus receive Him no longer hunger for life, be cause they possess life everlasting. Jesus, in His day, made some great claims. The people of His day questioned them, for they knew Him as the son of Joseph and Mary— people of humble origin. Today, in the name of science, men often question His claims. Yet, in this complex mechanism which is hu manity, we are conscious of a hunger for per sonal security, of personal involvement that ma terial things cannot satisfy. We question who we are, why we are, what we are. Our hunger manifests itself in cur search for something to cling to; to give our life meaning and perpetu ation. Someone once said that even an atheist has his belief in non-belief. How true! For one must believe in something to make life worth while. If one did not, then all the human suf fering, the spiritual travail to which man Is heir—all this would be for naught. Jesus said: "I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35). In this verse Jesus was relating himself to a practical need of the people. Bread, for the people of Palestine, was an essential of life— much more so than it is for us today; with a drought, or like calamity, their very existence was threatened. Therefore, as was His wont, Jesus was reaching them through basic logic. There was only one difference—a great differ ence—He was talking about another essential. He was speaking of a spiritual need, a spiritual famine, a spiritual plentitude. Beset as we are with our inadequacies (and those of other people) we need a spar to which to cling. Where else can we find it, then in our religion, in our personal beliefs? For in our needs we find God, and in our deeds we per petuate Him. As we find Him, so our personal witness grows. As Americans—the best-fed, best-clothed, best housed people in this world—we face the per sonal danger of being the poorest of the poor. For life can be cluttered up, without being filled up. Each of us has something inside himself that Concluded on Pago 7 BELK - TYLER'S EDEN TON’S SHOPPING CENTER W. E. Smith GENERAL MERCHANDISE "Rocky Hock” PHONE 221-4031 EDENTON M. G. Brown Co., Inc. Many things determine a man’s potential for positions of re sponsibility and trust; one of them is character. Character isn’t easy to define—it is much easier so recognize. This man goes to church every Sunday . . . not because he is seeking character . . . but because he is seeking God.
