Chairman; C. M. Evans, Oaivd T. Bateman, N. J. George. Alton G. Elmore. The invocation was given by Commissioner Bateman. Chairman Phillips called the meeting to order. On motion of Commissioner Bateman, seconded by Commissioner Evans and unanimously carried, approving the minutes of the previous meetings. On motion of Commissioner Bateman, seconded by Commissioner Evans and unanimously carried, that bills be Jones Named To Foundation Board W. P. (Spec) Jones, of Eden ton, has been named to the Board of Directors of the N. C. Humanities Foundation, Inc., a new non-profit organization to develop support for the School of Liberal Arts at N. C. State University. Jones was one of 40 prominent citizens of North Carolina named as directors at the foundation’s organization meeting this week at N. C. State. State Treasurer Edwin Gill presided at the organization’s first meeting. John Council of Lake Waccamaw was elected president and Mrs. Maceo Sloan of Durham was elected vice president. Rudolph Pate, NCSU director of foundations, and John D. Wright, NCSU vice chancellor for business, were elected secretary and treasurer respectively. State Chancellor John T. Caldwell called the foundation’s organization a most significant development for liberal arts and said its work would help achieve the same level of excellence for the humanities and social sciences as has been accomplished in the sciences and technologies at the university. Dean Robert O. Tilman reported to the new foundation directors that liberal arts is the largest school at N. C. State University—with 3,200 majors. He said there are 240 faculty. Ross Accepted By Honor Group WENTWORTH-William A. Ross, son of Mrs. J. J. Ross of Edenton, has been initiated into Alpha Kappa Chapter of lota Lambda Sigma, national honor fraternity in industrial and technical education. The induction banquet was held at N. C. State University in Raleigh. Ross received his B. On motion of Commissiner Elmore, seconded by Commissioner Bateman and unanimously carried, approving a request by Troy Toppin, Chairman of Highway Safety, that a request be made to the Department of Transportaion in reference tothe area on R.P.R. 1114; that the area between R.P.R. 1113 and R.P.R. 1119 be declared a business and residental 'district. This area is approximately one mil in length and includes 24 residences, one church, one Junior Chamber of Commerce building, and eight places of business. Also request a 45 mile per hour speed limit, especially due to heavy truck traffic. After a discussion with the Downtown Committee relative to the construction of a Courthouse Jail facility, a motion was made by Commissioner Elmore, seconded by Commissioner George and unanimously carried, that prior to any actual acquistion of land for constructing a Courthouse Jail facility, that a public hearing will be held- It was reported that Jesse L. Harrell had been appointed by the Town Council to work with the representatives of County.wide Water System. Melvin Howell, County Supervisor of F.H.A., appeared before the Board in the interest of application matters pertaining to County-wide Water System.
