May :i.The marc kets to-day have exhibited more Inherent weakness than for a long time past snd the decline of 10 to II points has resulted net from sny pressure by bears but rath er owing to scattered liquidation by small holders. Influenced by flagging spot mar kets and ideal crop weather. For many weeks, Mr. Price lias endeavored.' by ev ery means In bis power, to crests a crop scare and attract outside speculative sup port to cotton, but without success. - Admitting-' a maximum consumption this year. It is seeu that no actuul scarcity Is posslbls and. while the iur plus may not be large, any Increase In its value must arise from impairment of the present excellent crop prospect The vis ible supply of American cotton at the close of 104 was In round figures 600,0 balee of cotton. But . It la recognised that a summer drought or an abnormally early rrost misnt easily alter tne prospect of abt ndance to actual scarcity and thia reflection exercises a wholesoms restraint upon indiscriminate short selling. Hence, we continue to expect only scalping mar kets and would favor trading In that way on moderate lines, buying; on declines or selling on advances, until the crop out look can be gauged witn a little more certainty. . May - C In spits of a steady Livtrpool, and spot sales of 11- 0CO balea, on lop of 4,000 additional Satur day afternoon, there was no snap to our market Over Sunday, the Impression gained ground that the big bulls had slipped out of most of tneir long cotton, and the continued sailing this morning by their brokers, waa considered a con formation of the end of the bull deul. How far this conclusion may be correct time only will show, but for ths present st least, it was sufficient to impel scat tered long liquidation, rne w earner over ths belt continues favorable, and and It was honed that the cloudy skies over the Carolinaa might bring rain so badly need ed there. Receipts are coming In rather freely and this Is pointed to as Indicating a 11 million commercial crop. To-morrow there will be the Usual weekly weatner report, which Is expected to be quite favorable. Taken altogether, there will b a combination of circum stances calculated to shake ths confi dence of bulls, hence the decline Is not surprising. The extreme decline of to-day waa.
