TUs mock market gave a good demonstration of Its absorp tive power to-day in lace ot enormous salea to realise on the week's considerable rise. The strong front on"era Dy tne murkrt t(: this selling was the more notable In view of its centering on St. Paul and Southern Paclno, which are fle-tlvo leaders of market sentiment and likely to influenoe the wnoie, market by sympathy. . The effective counter active Influence to .this realising was the enormous and sggrssslve buying of the United States Steel stocks, the un Wieldly bulk of which makes' thorn veit difficult to move effectively, but whloh are of corresponding effect un aentiuient when there Is a striking movement in them. The profit-taking in Southern Pa cific carried it at one time about 2 points below the high level of the week imd til. Paul was ss much as 8 points off. Ef fective disclaimers were made to-day ot the rumors of the passing of control of St. Paul Into L'nlon Pacific hands which were circulated yesterday to offset the disappointment over the non-action of tne t. f aui directors on mo nnanciai Man. The effect of these disclaimers was argely confined to St. Paul Itself, al- tbousli the rumors were an infiueuce In lifting the whole market before. The selling to reullxe extended to othr quarters of the list and affected (lie trans-continental railroads aults gen erally as well as some of -the Eastern trunk lines. Some of the stocks which were subjected to this process recovered late on - view of the steady absorption which met the offerings. The . ease of the money market and the promise of a strong bank statement kept the specula tive movement free from obstacles on that account. Some Urge disbursements made esterday converted tne previous loss of ths banks to the aub-Treasury Into - small gain. But the returns from the Interior movement are chiefly relied upon to Increase the caed showing of the banks. The parallel strength and realising went on In the market through out ana kept it irregular up to the closing. Bonds were steady. Total sales. value. 81.39.000. Tpa bears would seem to hava played their last card. Notices for August delivery nave uoen nuiueii lorcing mo llqutda tlon of probably 70,000 bale of long August In this market; but tho rest or tne lint is steady as a rock and snows a tendency toward an advance. If any evidence wera needed of the magnitude of tho short Interest this would be convincing, and I repeat that In my opinion there are at least I.ooo.ooo bales of futures short In tho New York market alonb. speak not from conjecture but from relatively accurate knowledge. One nine concern in Memphis, that re cently failed, is said to have been short 30.000 bales. If this was the case with one single office in South western city, hat is true of the whole United States 7 From now un til the government report, I aspect a nervous market, nut tho magnitude of the short Interest will prevent any aecuna ana tne sngntest intimation of hot weather In Texas will result In a substantial advance. . As bearing on me Durcau report to be published a week from to-day. I may any that assuming average condition from the aay or that report to the end of the season: - . A percentage of 18 will indicate a crop or io.820.000 bales. A percentage of IS will Indicate a crop of 10.780,000 bale. - - - A percentage of II will indicate a crop of 10,880.000 bale. A percentage of 80 will indicate a crop of 10,880,000 bale. . . A percentage of 78 will Indicate a crop or 10.400.000 bales. A percentage of 78 will indicate a crop or id, z v, uuu oaies. s . A comparison with last year's fig, urea is misleading. , because from the 1st of August to the end of th season last year tne ere-D deteriorst ea oniy 1.7 against an average data. rioration for the same period in the nine year previous of 18.8. A tsr. rlble disaster was averted laat yesr by the extraordinarily favorable condi tion prevailing after the 1st of Au. gust, of which the early maturity of the plant allowed It to take full ad vantage this year, the crop in from two to three week later than the average and probably four to ' five weeks later than last year, so that it In hardly likely that laat - year's antumnat growth can be duplicated thta seasons, .
