Through tha towering rocky , portals , of the Golden - Gate heavy laden with tha romance of centuries into the har bor of the city of a hundred hills; Into 1new Saa Francisco, risen from Aha ruins of two years ago, tha Atlantic battleship fleet steamed , to day in review of a multitude unnum bered. A portion of Mr. Norrla testimony . which excited particular Interest . among the committee waa that which related to the prlre of pulp wood sent from Canada. Mr. Norrts . pointed out that these figures were quit different from reports of $10 and 111 per cord for wood at Canadian prints. -l Frederick M. Messier, of The Ashe vllle. N. Wh en four miles a way th tTshl ps came Into full view of the thousand lining th shores. To the north of the gateway Mount Tamalpals, raising Its peak 2,600 feet above th sea, was crowded with the early riser. Fort' Baker on the ahor also was thronged with sightseers. Near the entrance th sloping marine shores, all the way from th heights down to Lime point, marking the north point of the Inner gate, were fairly covered with thousands. To the south of tho sate way from the Presidio to the site of the famous Cliff House, the seal rocks and for mile along the 'beaches, the division of the crowd that made up the estimated total of a million onlookers were gathered In great black patches. The cannon of the Presidio and of Fort Baker boomed a aalute of 21 guns as the Connecticut passed with in the-headlanda of the gate. The compliment was returned by the Con necticut amid loud cheers from the people on shore. The ships as they sailed Into th bay were dressed only at th mast head, big American flnga flying at fore and after truck and at tbe peak of the gaffs. - Passing-to anchor the ehlps steam ed in-review before Secretary Metcalf and the Connecticut fired a salute of 17 guns. When the last of the ships had fallen into the four long anchor age line a signal from the flagship sent the fluttering )ince of rainbow flags flying to tha mastheads and the ship were at full dress for th day. . .No class of, cltixenn in the city was more Interested In the coming of the fleet than the Chine. Th Japanese residents also gathered in large num bers on th hillside to e th pa geant.
