It waa also reported thai etorm warnings had been Issued for the Vreat Gulf coast, which In connection with tha special forecast noted above suggested that tha more severe storms might be In Bouth central and Southwest' ern sections of-tha belt where. the most cotton la open end which U accompanied by high winds might causa damage 'to quantity as well aa to quality of yield. " October contracts here sold at 150, this being tha first Inatance In a long time that a. local contract had been sTbov the price quoted for middling in any. of the Southern spot markets. (rroCK mrauLT. New Tork. Bept. 17. An upward reac tion in prices of stock in tha early part ef to-day served to demonstrate that large sjoculatlve liquidation was awatt-ina- to take advantage of the better prices. A violent relapse from the ad vanced level was the consequence, he movement of the early part of the day was greatly confused and baffled efforts to decide whether support for the mar ket to facilitate liquidation wan aeaignea or whw'hor attempts were making to ac cumulate stocks for a renewed upward turn. The market proved to be mnn honeycombed with stop-loss orders than had been supposed and tha bears had good success In uncovering these and precipitating some disorder In the efforts to execute them. The supposition that high financial suthorltles were no longer rommltted to an opinion of unmixed con Idence In the speculative outlook Is suf ficient ground to shake the speculative labric as they have been credited with tha largest part, both by advice and by action in lifting prices to the level re cently attained. Much attention was paid to the money situation aa affected by the turn in the current movement to wards the Interior. This development. While not of formidable proportions, es pecially In view of the strong bank po sition, cannot be neglected , as a factor modifying the late redundancy of the money market The upward reaction early to-day was due to a subsidence of yesterday's rumors of financial embar rassments, which had to do with affairs local to the stock exchange. Bonds were easy. Total sales, par value, $3,690,000. V. S. 2s advanced H and the 4s 14 Per cent. In the bid price on call. Total sales to-day 871,100 shares.
