T.w.wooD & sons, SMdsnwn, Rlohmond, Va. 9 shock to those on the outside of the individual interests, and the failure of the big mill has been the theme of conversation today in all circles and much specula tion as to the consequences has been indulged im. The Observer's correspondent, in an interview with Mr. J. M. Odell on his arrival from Greens boro tonight, was given the fol lowing information concerning the affairs of the concern: The Odell Manufacturing Com pany comprises the OdelLMilis Numbers 1, 2, a, -1 and 5, and the Buffalo Thread Mills, located at this place. For sometime past the mills have not been making the profits necessary to conduct a successful business, and on ac count of the stringency of the money market they were forced to the wall- The mills operate 240,000 spindles and 800 looms, j The capital stock is $597,500. Li-; abilities,. $600,000, with assets amounting to more than $1,200, 000. Quick assets are said to be about '$280,000. It takes $3,000 a day to run these mills. The J. M. Odell Manufacturing Com pany (the Bleachery), find Mag nolia Mills Nos. 1 and 2, at this place, are separate and distinct organizations, and are not in the least affected. The failure of the Southern Cotton Mills and the Vermont Mill, at Bessemer City, is not responsible for the closing of the affairs of the Odell Manufactur ing Company at this place. The J. M. Odell Manufacturing Com pany, ot Chatham, is capitalized at $67,500; the Kerr Bag Manu facturing Company at $124,000, and the Magnolia Mills at $25, 000. Mr. Odell applied to Judge Boyd at Greensboro today, pray ing for a receiver, and the pray er was granted in the person of Mr. Cone. Mr. Odell stated that it is not likely that the mills affected will I close down at all, and if at all, on j iy temporarily. The annual i meeting of stockholders will be ' t. 1 ...
