No More Seed Loans But Something Better » Under' the htew laws governing the work,of the Farm Credit Ad ministration, new machinery is be ing set up (or the handling of seed and fertilizer loans beginning with the 1934 season. North Carolina farmers will handle their own credit needs with the oid of the Produc tion Credit Corporation affiliated with the Land Bank of Columbia. The new plan provides for farm ers to secure adequate and perma nent credit^ for producing crops, breeding, lousing and fattening livestock products. The Production Credit Corpora tion has a capital Stock of $7,100, 000 and will organize, provide the initial credit for and supervise. the operation of local production credit associations in all communities where the need exists. “It will be the duty of these as sociations to make loans directly to farmer-borrowers and the associa tions will, in turn, discount the farmers’ notes directly with the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Columbia,” says A. F. Lever, in charge of public relations for the bank. "If ten or more farmers manifest an interest in forming an association ,the Columbia Corpora tion will send a representative to the community to help arrange The matter. County farm agents will also help.” These associations are not to be set up to provide an easy way for farmers to get into debt but to help , him get out and stay our of debt, Mr. Lever eyplains. He says that anyone desiring definite informa-, tion about how to organize one of j the associations should talk over th matter with the farm agent or write directly to the Corporation at Columbia, South aCrolina. It is the belief of extension au rhoriteis at State College that this new plan will be found more sat isfactory in the long run than the old seed loans of the past. FATALLY HURT T. H. Nothing has pleased the Admin stration’s friends so much as the lews from Bombay that the Indi in cotton spinners are now begin ling to buy American cotton igain, something made possible by th depreciation of the dollar in :erms of gold. Another stimulus to the foreign :rade of the United States and a stabilizer of world [prices is ex lected shortly. If those closest to :he Treasury are to be believed, :here is a definite silver-purchase jrogram shaping up, which shoul lave a great effect in bringing ibout a speedy adjustment of inter - rational currencies and lifting world prices. Less attention is being paid to the NRA and the Codes, now that the period of the "Blue Eagle” igreement is shortly to expire and the big industries are beginning to operate under the group or associa tion codes. More interest is focuss ing on the new Civil Works Ad ministration, directed by Harry Hopkins, regarded by many as one of the best and ablest men in Washington. Men are being put to work all ovr the country' on jobs of a public or semi-public na ture, and money is being poured out in pay envelopes without toe much bookkeeping and auditing. Thre is every' confidence here that the stimulus of this "priming the business pump” will be felt by New Year’s and so stimulate wan ing confidence. Early in December hearings are to be begin on the Tugvee’’ bill, intended to put the clamps on the advertising and selling of proprie tary medicines, cosmetics and food products which don’t come up to standards which, the manufac turers say, are impossible to main tain, and which most impartial ob servers regard as unnecessary and oppressive. There will be a big lobby in opposition to the bill, and a big fight is ahead. The opposi tion is not alone from manufac turrs and advertisers, but also from newspapers, which would be serious- J ly affeted. The strongest ground of opposition is the danger of put ting control of any business into the hands of Government bureau crats, which the Tugwell bill, in its present form, would do do. Two Fire Alarms Wednesday Night The fire department answered two alarms Wednesday night the: first being a silent alarm at 9:35 to the home of Jule Allman on West Council Street to extinguish a grass fire, no damage resulted. The second c'alf was from box 59 at 12:00 o’clock. A motor in the refrigeration machine jn the Smoke Shop on South Main street had caught on fire. At the same time, figures fur nished in Washington by Federal officials showed, more than 600 Government agents were wounded. But in suffering these casualties the Federal men arrested around 800.000 persons and seized $205, 151.000 worth of property, includ ing liquor and stills. The heaviest casualties recorded up to the end of the 1932 fiscal year were in 1930, when 14 agents were killed and 116 injured, An equal number lost their lives in 1921, but the injuries totaled only 13 that year. The number injured in 1931 and 1932 are not recorded, but five were killed the former year and nine the latter. 'v Repeal puts "public enemies” on the run.
