The Pbcenix. :We were glad to see the very large and attentive audience at the Opera House last night to greet Alilton Nobles and his ey cellent Compauy in that thrilling modem sensaiio jal drama 'The Phcenix." Th.s play, written by Mr. Xobles, and now in its fifth season, had been presented to the Wilmington public on a previous occasior, but lost nothing in Ihf ir eyes by a second rendi ion. It is one cf those -peculiarfy pleasi. g portrayals where the humorous and pathetic, comic and thrilling situations are so closely intermingled as to bring into pleasant exercise the various sensations of enjoyrJent without fatiguing auy particu lar emotion with a too closs atteulion. We were glad to see that;the audience gave all the evidence of pleasure, which so merito rious performance ricbly merited. t Mr. Nubles, iu tbe two phases of ttie leading character, Carroll Gt azes and Jim Jlluflo, "j-'he llioenix," seemed scarcely. a creation, but leal in individual idenliu with those episodes of his life, of which the performance treats naturally, appearing before the audience. The scenes were life-like and vivid, and wejre per fectly enacted. j Mr. Schwartz as Moses Solomons, tbe jolly, rollicking, fun-loving Jew, was simply inevitable. This one impersona tion deserves to make his fortune. The audience were perfectly convulsed when ever he appeared. It is one of the most successful representations we have ever seen, and this one character alone would be attractive enough in itself if all lse were wanting. j The other characters were very well, assumed, Miss Burt as Sadie, the flower girl, and afterwards as Kffie EUmorc, the actress, was recognized as an old favorite, and her songs, which were rendered in a rich contralto voice, were vocifuously applauded. Miss Amy Lee, as Kate Vernon, was also very charming. We do not think, bow- ever, that the Leslie Blackburn of the piece was as well presented as when tha troupe were here on their previous visit, anJ the seme may be said of the character of Tom Fergus, the detective. Our peo ple cannot soon forget how excellently that character was formerly sustained by Mr. Pritchard. "We would be glad to ea Mr.JNobles ' and his company visit us again soon. It is a performance which deservas to run for a week, even in a city of the size of Wilmington, and we could witness it with pleasure for six successive nights. New Advertisements.
