Agriculture is more remu n ntive in the middle and western coanties, and the people generally are in beUer condition than are those nearer the Atlantic coast, where the negro population is much greater. And then the money crops of the East, cotton, corn, naval stores and lumber, main ly, bate not ji IdeJ such , prodts ( as have tbe more remunerative crops of wheat and tobacco tbat have been so largely raised for sale since the ar, in the more Western counties. True, cotton is raised to pome extent in these counties, but it may b st id that the wheat and tobacco regions ot North Carolina bave been since tbe war, and are now, the most proeper ous fections. The comparative ex emption of these counties from those curst 8 of carpet bagging that bave so sadly arllicted the East in their demor alizing influences upon public morals, and especially upon the negro popula tion there, is unother cause of the worn condition of the East. If be fails to do this ha is diccharged at once, and hence he sub mits to discipline and dot-s better wok for the same wages that he does ii the easf.There are other cases that are acting to lay tbe finger of hard times "more beavily upon tbe east than the west, such as the greater observance of economy and tbe more avoidance of debt on the part of these western people, o. &c. &c, but these causes need not be dwelt upon in this letter. Tbat bard times prevail all over North Carolina is now more generally admitted and more painfully experi enced than ever before. That resump tion on tbe 1st of January will not, as promised by the bard money men, relieve the farming and industrial classes, is tbe common sentiment of the people as well as of our wisest financiers and- statesmen. We bave been told that tbe practice of economy and avoidance of debt would soon extricate our struggling farming and snneriDg masses. JJravely and per sistently bave tbey, for years, used ecomomy and worked bard and denied themselves acd families as did our coble acd self -sacrificing men and women during the war.
