There are three illustrated articles'- "Yorkshire 'iWways," 44 The Artists Island," and Wild Boars snd Boar Hunting." Miss Lallan contributes a striking story of Irish life called Flitters, Tatters, and the Counsellor. "A Young Girl's Ex periences during theTwo Sieges of Paris," gives a thrilling picture of the life of a Parisian family at the time of the Franco German war, and the fearful scenes en- tha Commune. A series of stories under the general title of "Wo men's Husbands" is begun ia this number. Edward C. Bruce gives a graphic account of a " Western Town." D. C. llacdonald describes & "Trip to Newfoundland" Mrs. ,Uooper sketches the . career of Madame Dubarry, and Sidney Lanier givcs.us "A Fairy Tale' for Grown Peo p!e." There are two rery striking poems ia the number. "The Poet's Protest," by AlfredIL Louis, and "Cbristus I" by Julia C. R.-Door. Miss Olney's charm ing serial, "ThVigh Winding Ways," grows in interck. snd the "Monthly Gossip" contains serial papers deserr ing of notice. The whole numbeT is bright and thoroughly readable from be ginning to end. Wo . notice that the publishers furnish free to all new sub scribers, in book-form, that portion of "Through Winding Ways" that has ap peared previous to the issue of the January number. Fashion Notes. Gentlemen wear plain shirt fronts -on all' occasions. Shoes for gentlemen hive narrower toes this season. ' White or cream-colored undressed kids are worn as evening gloves by the most fashionable women. A lovely bonnet is made of white downy feathers, in which nestle small, brilliant green enamel bugs. Scarfs of chenille, with deep 'fringe, aie used i for bonnet strings. , , Among the recent novelties reported from Paris are pocket handkerchief suits. For the benefit of thoee seeking 'Paris novelties,' it may be well to add that it requires forty-fire handkerchiefs to make a dress, and if the bordering be properly arranged these make an'exceedinglj pecu liar and stylish costume. The present style of dressing the haif in Paris shows two extremes. One or these carries it up to the top of the head, tearing the back of it fiat, as was tbe styls seten yeamgo.,The otherjstyle, adop ted by he eliU for receptions at jhome, shows he hair laid flat against the back of the bead and neck In what are called Oriental braids of many strands, held down by ornaments, some plain and others sparkliaj with jewels, , 1 We are Ready- We wero not present in the Court Room yesterday afternoon at the tine but we understand that His Honor, Judge Meares, produced in Court a copy of Tuee lav's Review and read the re '"reman article relative to a trial which had taktn place the previous nay and thereupen directed tha Solicitor to have the Editor Knows arx u tbe matter. - He are ready cow? One of the pleasantest hours it 1ns been our good fortune to spend fvr some! time past was spent this rooming at the Hem menway Public School, near the corner of Campbell street, taught by Mrs. Flora J. Wise as Principal, and .her assistants, Mrf. Lnra'P. Rothwpll, Mrs. M. O. Wallaca, Miss Mary Duguid and - Miss Alice Thryaw. There are oae hundred and thirty-one names on the roll books of th school and the attendance as aj gen eral thing is very pood. The scholars show that they are well disciplined and well taught and their movements are reg ulated with military, precision and order upen the tap of the bell. On the Golden List," for perfect les sons for tne past month, are recorded the names of Masters John Yoss, Eddie Moore Herbert Holden, Albert Blizzard, Frank Welton, and Misses Mittie Monroe, An nie Freemau, Jennie Sylvia' and Lena McQuigg. The "Roll of Honor"' for pro priety of deportment contains the names of Masters Frank Welton, Willie Bloom, Fred Bissinger, Joseph Kennedy, and Misses Jennie Sylvia, Lena McQuigg, Katie Bunting Josie Howland and JuUa Yopp. I All the Enclisb branch s are taught be sides kindergarten and objec t lesions, and the recitations of the cuiklro.n reflected gi eat credit on themselves and on (hose whose duty it it was to impart to them the store of general knowledge, they have received. The geometrical diagrams drawn and explained by the scholars were ex ceedingly fiue. Upon our arrival at the school rooms, tin scholars were taking their noon recets, and when summoned by the bell, they marched in tho rooms and filed to their respective seat in a manner and with that order which is pleasing to witness. After reciting the Commandments, a psalm, and singing their opening hjmn, they1 went through the calisthenic exer cises, led by Master Walter Shaw , which included the body, arm, foot and .bead movements. The precision witli which these exercises were executed was won derful. As a health movement llhey are looked upon as indispensable by many physicians. The little ones in the primary department , presided over by Miss Thi yaw, are a curiosity. The aje taught orally, and their knowledge of the geogra phy of the world would do credit to much older heads. They are thoroughly taught the kindergarten and object lessons, and have the names of geometrical figures at their tongues' ends. , The main room of the school is provided with new and comfortable desks and seats, and tbe little ones In the primary depart ment bare for their use nice, comfortable I little chairs, with book racks attached. 9 i We were not aware Of tbe high state of perfection'to which the art of 1 !nstructing tbe young had been brought in our public schools and in the future ignorance will no longer be a misfortune, but a crime ; for knowledge, is now imparted without money and without price. Wilmington has just cause to be proud of her public schools, and "parents ought to reeognire the importance of sustaining them by their rec ognition of the merit which is in them. Hotel AJTlrals.
