According to the Pharmaceutical Re cord, t here is a lurpeotine farm near Live Oak, Florida, upon which five stills are operated, and work given to 250 hsnds. The farm includes 18,000 acres ot land and produces annually 175, COO gallons of tur pen line, and 14. 000 barrels of rosin J The managers of the New Orleans Exposition have been forced to ac knowledge finally that their load of debt is greater than tbey can carry. It is over $3,000,000. The state Com missioners and exhibitors have, there fore, determined to apply to Congress for another appropriation. Miss Mary Custis Lee. daughter of General Lee, visited the National Muse um a few Jays ago lo look at the Wash ington relics there that she might iden tify those taken during the war from Arlington. The relics were in the Pat ent Office from 1861 to 1882, when they were removed to the National Museum. Mt8 Le has a miniature of Martha Washington which was buried during the war. It is the one of which Mrs Washington spoke in a letter written the last year of her lite. It is announced that Italy has replied formally to the protests' of the Porte against the occupation ol Egyptian p;r!s along the Red Sea by Italian forces. In icply Itaiy admits the claims of the Suit an to the sovereignty of the Red Sea. but decjlares that she lifts felt he: self obliged to occupy cer tain ports in oider to pro'ect her Ital ian subjects, whi were imperilled by the withdrawal of the Egyptian garri- I sons. "Paly will,1' the reply concludes, j "allow the Egyptian to remain side by l.siile with the Italian flag at every occu 1 pied point.1' Brndstrccci's furnishes the following commercial summary for ihe past week : The late interruption in the move ment of freight East from heNoithwest has resulted in an accumlation of pro duce at Chicago and elsewhere west, and ihe eastbour.d truck lines have had, for the time being, more than they could promptly forward. In the preceding week the eastbound tonnage increased 50 par cent, over prior aver-Hg-is. and the outlook is ior a corres ponding exhibit this week. Special telegrams to BradstreeCs yesterday re ported the most hopeful feeling respect ing tbc outlook for an improvement in general trude at St Paul, Minn. This was based apparently on light stocks held by country merchants, fair collections, and the absence ot heavy indeotcdness among traders trib utary to that city. There was a "slight improvement" in the condition of busi ness at Lawrence, Kan., at Memphis, Tenn., and at San Fancisco, al though at the latter city no re sults of the improvement were yet via ble. The dry goods distribution from Chicago is spoken ot more favorably, but that of boots and shoes is not. The movement of general merchandise from that city shows very little gain, but there is considerable confidence for the future. At St. Louis, New Orleans and Cincinnati trade is very quiet. Phil idelpbia sales are for actual wants only. In the east the print cloth makers are accumulating stocks and prices are again tending downward. The boot and shoe industry at Boston, is promised a better movement. Money at Boston is firmer, but no new enterprises are projected. At New York general trade is quite dull Buyers here from the South and W est in leading staple lines do net appear to expect to take in ex cess ot near-by wauts. Cotton is quiet and easy, it has been aiternate'y firm on account ot smaller receipts, and weaker owing to a decline in the spec ulate c demand and the unsatisfactory business with spinners Dry goods bus trs show but little increased in clination to operate and a fair volume of trade is passing, although there is no spirit in the demand. The iron and ;deel industry at the east furnishes no encouraging features. The almost entire abseuce ot stocks suggests that a renewed demand would be sure to be followed by a sharp advance, but no such gain in inquiries is reported by I host) perUcttv able to judge The ndhra i e coal tradu at tidewater has been disturbed bv the action of Bead ing and Lehigh Valley cutting tolls and pricts in reply to the action of 'he Pennsylvania Railroad in agreeing to deliver coal in the territory heretofore controlled by the other roads. The wool trade has been moderately active at well-sustained prices. There is a slight tendency to improvement in the market for desirable wools adapted to the wants of worsted manufacturers. in grrcery 8'jD!es several laro houses report increased orders from the country, but the volnme of trade is re stricted when compared with a 3 ear ago Coffee is steady for Rio and weak lor mild grades. Sugar is 1 wer. with a somewhat restricted demand. Dairy products are decidedly dull. Bread stuff prices have been dull all the week until within two days No. 2 red wheat sold yestcrdf y at 94ic. against 92u. a week ago. No, 2 mixed corn sold at 50$c. against 50c on the 30th ult. Flour has been du.l. with advantages slightly in holders' favoi owing to light receipts and decreased production west. There were 330 failures in the United States during the past week re p rted to Bradstreet's, as compared with 349 in the preceding week, and with 257, 256 and 159 resDectivelv in the corresponding weeks of 1884, 1883 aud 1882 About 86 per cent, were those of small traders whose capital was less than $5,000. Canada had 38, a uecrease 01 . PERSONAL. El Mahdi is a bigger man than Arabi Pasha. Michael Davit t has arrived at Home fr mi Ireland. The ladies of New Orleans are very 1 charitable. The School for Scandal is rehearsing! in London for Mrs. Langtry. Sarah Bernhard: is said to receive $800 a month for her contributions to newspapers. Henry George is mentioned as a pos sible Parliamentary candidate for Caitb nesshire, Scotland. Sena'tor-e'ect Evarts, of New York, ! owns a bouse but a few steps from the Senate wing ol the Capitol. f ra ffi-klo t ho ' T.m n n -Til no" f if journalism, is reported seriously ill of pneumonia in New York. Speaker' Carlisle believes that the time will tome when the form of aa oath will be done away with in the courts. Sir Arthur Sullivan dees most of his writing musical composition, rather between midnight and sunrise .He se lects that time because it is so quiet. FEBKUAK Y FUN. Instead ot buying a new dress, why not turn the old one?" She "Turn the old one, indeed. Your income is plenty lage enough if you do not spend it all at the club. You'd better do a little turning yourself." He "I? Why, what can I turn?" She "Turn over a new leaf." A German scientist says that the brain and spinal cord are conductors, "and hence a lightning stroke on the head does not materially injure the brain beyond shattering the nerves and causing demrorary derangement." This is sweet consolation ; but all the same, duriug a thunder storm, ninety nine women out of a hundred will t-hut themselves up in a dark room or take refuge in cellar. Ths old. old story: The Colonel ' Yes, he was senior wrangler of his year and she t k a mathematical scholarship at Girton; and now they're engaged!" Mrs. Jones 'Dear me, how interesting! and oh, how different their conversation must be from the insipid twaddle of oidinary hirers!" "If 3 ou do not at once romil the $100 you owe our firm " wrote a dun tho other day to a delinquent debtor, "we shall be obliged to put the bill into the hands of a lawyer for collection." "My dear sir,1' replied the debtor, urbanely, by the next posr, - if you ate happily acquainted with a lawyer who is able to collect $100 from me, I beg you to send him to me at once, for I shall be glad to employ him in my own in terest."
