The many friends of Goore M.Snedes, Esq , were shocked yesterday morning when a telegram anuounced his death, which occurred at the home of bis sis ter, Mrs. M. P Leak, iu Wndosbc ro, Sunday morning, at 2 o'clock. Mr. Smedes left Raleigh, Friday evening. in seemingly good health, and the news of his very sudden death casta gloom over this entire city, where he Wfts f-o well known and so unviersally esteemed. He was the youngest son of the late Rev. A. Smedes, who was tor a number of years Rector of St. Mary's school, in this city. He was in the very prime of a promising and use ful life, being just 34 years of age. He was educated at the University of Vir ginia, after which he aught school f r a while He then went to Ntw York, where he read law; returning to Ral eigh, he was in 1876 granted license to practice'. In 1879 he was one of the Democratic candidates for ihe Legisla ture in Wake county and was the only Democrat elected. As a representative, he served his people well. He was ex ceedingly pleasant in his intercourse with his associates; always a ijeniaJ. j kind and clever gentleman ; strikingly handsome, and the very picture ol health. The news of his death will be received with profound sorrow by friends and acquaintances all over the country. Charlotte Observer: The most de structive.fire that has been known in Charlotte for many years, occurred yesterday morning before daybreak. It destroyed two large storehouses, oc ctitied bJihree firms, and entailed a loss of $70,000. Oae human life was also sacrificed by the lames. The fire originated in a lodging room, on the second Boot of Schitf & Bro.'s store on Trade street, just east of the Centra! Hotel. When discovered ihe flames Were bin sting Irona thu ro;f and were making rapid progress.
