Dixon ail.) Sun.. If a high protective tarifE brings high wages, and a low tariff or free trade brings low wages, will some protectionist please answer these questions? . 1 Why is it that the wages of strip pers and grinders in English cotton mijls producing a medium quality of goods in 1850, after what the 'Irish World calls five. 'centunes of protec tion, amounted to the princely sum of $2.55 per week of sixty hours ? ; Why is it that the wages of wind ers in the same mills in 1850, after five hundred years of ' protection, amounted to no more than $3.04 per week ? . Why is it that, in thirty-three years of free trade, from 1850 to 1883, the wages of the men just men tioned increased 100 per cent., the hours of labor being reduced to fifty six per week ai the same time ? Since 1789 there has been a duty on coal ranging from 56 cents to $2.80 per ton; since 1872 it has been 75 cents per ton on! bituminous coal. Why is it, Mr. Protectionist, that the wages of miners of soft coal in the United States fell from $1.24 per ton in 1870 to 78 cents per ton in 1880, arid to 50 cents per ton in 1884? Why is it that the wages of coal miners in free trade England in creased 43 per cent. :under free trade? Why is it that the wages of build ers in free trade England increased 39 per cent, under free taad'e ? ' . Why is it that wages are higher in free trade England i than in high tariff Germany ? Why is it that the average wages of employes in, boot and shoe fac tories in the United States fell from 52 cents for each pair made in 1870 to 35 cents in 1880? ! . Why is it that the wages of cot ton factory hands in" the United States decreased 18 per cent, from 1870 to 1S80? THE CAMPAIGN. Richmond, Oeti 29. The Re publican managers in this State intend to resort to the appointment of United States Deputy Marshals to help swell their voting' strength. Special Dispatch to Phil. Times. Albany, Oct. 29. -The Demo crats have to day received assurances from New York that Tammany is to give its full strength for Cleveland. The result has been that never was so much bettiDg done on the State as has been going on this af ternoon and evening. The friends of Gov. Cleveland have been betting the Republi-" cans out of their boots. Special to the N.. Y. World. Washington, Oct. 29. The Democratic claims to-day are bolder than they have been before during the campaign. At the Democratic headquarters it is spo ken of as settled, that New York will be carried for Cleveland by from 60,000 to 75,000 majority, and it is declared he will sweep the country. They claim Indiana, New Jersey, Connecticut, Nevada and Ohio also. The last State is believed as certain, as there will be no more marshal control at the polls, and Hamilton county will turn the State over to them Soecial to the N. T. World. New York, Oct: 29. A re vised estimate of the probable vote of New York city and county, prepared at the headquarters of the Republican State Com mittee, concedes only 23,000 plurality to Cleveland, with the slim allowance of 10, 000 votes to Butler. About 5,000 votes is estimated as Butler's strength in Kings county, and about 15,000 more in the rest of the State. Less than a month since But ler's managers were claiming 50,000 votes for him in New York and Kings, and 100, 000 in the State. Their estimates just made up figure out only 50,000 for the en tire State. At Democratic headquarters it is agreed that the Republican estimate of Butler's vote is as correct as can be ascer tained, but they laugh at the idea of only 23,000 plurality for Cleveland in this City andj county. Members of the National Committee assert they are willing to go on record as claiming for Cleveland a majority fully up to that of Tilden's in 1873, and his vote in the 8tate will maintain at least the relative proportion of j Tilden's. Special Dispatch to Bait. Sun. - - New Yoek, Oct. 29. Mr. Blaine has returned to New York to take personal direction of his campaign during its closing days. Being an adept in the game of play ine men and interests one against another, to suit himself, he will be kept busy a great deal of the time receiving the different ele ments he hopes and intends to manipulate. He began this feature of his work early this morning. His managers, before his arrival, had arranged to have a large delegation of ministers, representing all denominations, meet him to day for the purpose of boosting the moral ends of JiU canvass The pro gramme agreed upon was carried out with great regularity. The preachers first passed rSolutifns denouncing Cleveland and then each one in turn made a speech to the Pre sidential candidate. If you want to break down the superiority of the white man, and destroy the noble spirit of : manhood that supports that superiority then vote - the Radical ticket, so that miscegenation may come and degrade proud North. Carolina to the level of barbarous Africa. Raleigh Register. Mr. Charles A". Cook, of Warren county, is the Liberal-Mott candidate opposing Mr. Davidson . A few years - ago he became somewhat conspicuous by his very bitter and virulent denunciaton of Judge Mcrri mon for accepting an office at the hands of the "infamous Republican party;" who was noted in his county . for his bitter warfare upon the Repub lican party, and who, until he was dis appointed in his aspirations for local office, intruded himself upon the attention of his people by his heavy warfare upon the Re publicans. He was one ; of the staunchest supporters of the present system of county government in the State up to the time, a few years ago, he was set aside as Solicitor of the Inferior Court by the county authori ties, for good cause; whereupon, he changed his opinion on the matter, and since has been lending his aid to injure his own fellow-citizens and State. His party in his county this year has nominated a negro for sheriff to collect the taxes of white people, and nominated all negroes for the Legislature to make laws for the white people of tbe State, and Mr. Cook is supporting these nominees. lie also .sup ports a negro solicitor of the district.
