After making atw high records daring today's early trading tha cotton market broke about 73 to 80 poiata from the, beat under realising or liquid tioa. October eon traeta told off from 6-00 to S5JS aad closed at 35.44, witk tka geaeral list doting steady, sat 19 poiata higher ta 33 poiata lower. The market, opened firm at aa ad vance of f to 49 aoiata aad aold 40 to 43 point mot higher daring the early - trading oa the relatively firm cables, the steadier tone of iterliag exchange and the continued wet weather ia the . South. The advance to 36.23 for Decem ber and 38.10 for January teemed to meet increased offerings, however, aad the selling became mora geaeral after the publication -l the weekly report of the weather. This read more favorably than expected stating that the crop had made satisfactory progreea except ia Eatterm belt sections where rainfall had been excessive and evidently ia- ei uu lav UMywiiiB w wf jw.e oa long cotton. There was also selling aa reporta of an easier spot basis ia the South with rumors that cotton was offering at prices which would permit of shipments here for delivery oa con tract. December broke to 35.40 aad January to 333- with active months generally selling some 30 to 40 points tenet lower bat at this level the market steadied oa covering with the eloee ! owing rallies of some IS to 25 points from the lowest. Liverpool and brok ers with Japanese connections were among tha early buyers but domettia trade demand was said to be lets active. The outlook for continued showers or . rains ia the Eastern belt, held selling In check during the earlier trading and the bulk of pressure later was attributed to realizing or liquidation. EARLY RISE DIDNT LAST IN NEW ORLEANS COTTON March Reached 35.97, Highest Future Yet Quoted; Long , r Sold Out New Orleans, July 23. After rising in a moderately etrong way ia the early trading today cotton fell off under sell lag out by longs who were disappointed with the official erop reports for the lstt week and by abort offerings from bearish traders who were impressed by the unfavorable- induatrial featurea de veloping ia England. The early rite carried March to 35.97, the highest fu ture price ever quoted, but from toward noon to the close the market was at a nst decline. The wet weather map and expectations of unfavorable government crop reports caused tha early buying, on which the market gained 31 to 60 points, March being the strongest month ia the list. Following the reading of the weekly reports at 10 o clock there was a break because tho trade generally eoasidered that tho returns were leas unfavorable than anticipated. Selling increased be cause of the unfavorable view taken of the marine strike In this eouatrr. which ia restricting exports and because of the coal and dock strikes in England. It was feared that the coal strike would cauto a fuel famine among the milll and much waa made of the statement that the dock strike had tied up 200 boats at Ijverpool. Developments were helpful to tha further substantial advance of quoted. values pa the Stock Exchange today, tha movement as a whole constituting another retreat of tha short interest. The optimistic views of Industrial executives respecting threatened labor disturbances, aews that Mexico will permit oil well boring, greater stability of sterling axehaage and continued re laxation of call moaey were effective ia overcoming fresh bearish aggressions. Tha moat interesting feature of the steel market wss the statement at a trade authority that news business in various finished products is being booked at a rata in excess of current output Buoyancy accompanied the initial dealings, steels and oils advancing one to four points. From these groups trading soon switched to numerous other issues, particularly motors and their subsidiaries, including leathers and electric equipments later comprehend ing food and tobacco shares. Metals were intermittently active at moderate gains but yesterday's broad demand for traasportatioas waa not re sumed, even the low grade rails lag ging, with the exception of Texas and Pacific, Denver and Bio Grande pre ferred aad St. Paul preferred. Shippings were at their best la the final hour, coming forward oa reports that definite negotiations were proceed ings for aa early settlement of the Ma rine strike. Considerable buying of low-prices utilities featured the firmer bond market, the Liberty division show ing marked strength. Old V. 8. reg istered 2's reacted 1-4 per cent on call. NtW YOU STOCK LIST. Owing- to the demor alization that the declaration of war caused, many persons traveling abroad were put to serious inconvenience. Amer ican Ambassadors and American Con suls abroad were oftentimes put to their wits end to provide ways and means to get Americans back to America. Upon one occasion a large number of .distressed and anxious Americans gath ered at the Consulate in Berlin. Many good American citizens shed tears when they learned that it was impossible for the United States Ambassador to furnish funds to transport them back home. You may depend upon it, it was an anxious,' hour. Finally one little Nortj Jgtalina lady, a a a a a j.a stated mat sne naa a cnecx on THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK T OF DURHAM. It was similar somewhat to the time when a lad was found having a basket and five loaves and two fishes. The check on THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK r OF DURHAM t made the solution easy. Persons wept for joy when the North Carolina lady, produced her check on t THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK -OF DURHAM and Ambassador Gerard said, "All is well." Weeping was turned into joy, and the little bunch was soon homeward bound, singing "Home Again and Praising THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DURHAM." These are facts.
