IgSSM 2 L* .11 UK/M0I |Mgl Apples Cracking Because Of Rain By CARL B. VaaDEMAN Daring the last ten days of June we were all hoping * for rain because It was so dry. Now for the past ten days or more we have been hoping It would ault raining for a while. Seems like we can't get the weather adjusted to suit us. Some Stayman apples are craeklng wide open because of the prolonged rainy weather fol lowing) the dry spell. Bitter rot and black rot both are almost sure to start infection in the ap ples that have cracked open. Bitter rot is likely to spread to the other apples that are not cracked. A good thorough spray ing of Bordeaux mixture 4-8-100 should be the best way to keep down the loss from bitter rot. This spray should be put on when the trees are not wet, be^ cause if the trees are wet and the Bpray dries slowly the blue stone will cause considerable russeting on the fruit. Such rus seting might cause more apples to crack open. Trees that have a full crop should be thinned and all the cracked, apples taken off. This thinning will not only get rid of a lot of worthless fruit but it will help the rest of the apples on the trees to grow to better size and color. It Is too late to use lead ar senate in your spray without too much danger of having an ex cessive residue of this poison on your fruit at picking time. D.D.T. could be used to control second brood worms if they are a prob lem in your orchard; that is, on any apples that will be picked after the 20 th of August. Plans are being made for the Brushy Mountain Fruitgrowers picnic and summer meeting on August 16. Plan now to attend. We want all the fruit growers to be present for this Interesting and worthwhile meeting. More details later. ADMINISTRATRIX'S NOTICE « North Carolina, Wilkes County.
