C., THURSDAY, JAN. 31, 1935 Vol. 8 PRESIDENT’S BALL GRAND AFFAIR Visitors from neighboring communities joined Tryonites Wednesday night in celebra tion of the 53rd birthday of the President of the United States and to raise funds for the relief of the suffering. Oak Hall hotel was properly decorated for the occasion and souvenirs and party hats added color. Tryon Boy Scouts acted as ushers, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. McDonald led the Grand March. Approximately 200 people enjoyed the affair. General Chairman S. T. Wood, was highly pleased with the results and expressed his ap preciation for the lassistanee of everyone aiding in anyway. The large birthday cake was won by Dean Shields, and Nelson Jackson, 111, was awarded the larger Shirley Temple doll. Miss Betty Doubleday was the lucky re ceiver of the smaller Shirley Temple doll. The large Russian dolls went to John T. Coates and Mrs. Seth M. Vining. Mrs. Joe Anderson received the third doll. Numerous other prizes and candy were received by holders of lucky tickets. Everyone enjoyed the occasion. The radio was turned on at 11:35 while President Roose velt gave his birthday message from Washington. Drama Fortnightly Performs Tonight — * The first performance of the current Drama Fortnightly pro duction will be given tonight dt the Parish House. The second per formance will be presented Fri day evening at the same place. Two one-act plays will be given. The first one-act play will be “Fixins”, a drama of Eastern North Carolina, written by Paul Green. Frank D. Moore will di rect this play and take part in tbe cast with W. B. Weigel and Miss Betty Doubleday. The second play under the direction of Dr. Chas. G. Sewall, is a comedy by Christopher Morley and is entitled “Thursday Evening,” an amusing domestic play of the present time and typi cal of modern Thursday evenings. The cast will consist of Mrs. C. P. Rogers, Mrs. C. D. Stevens, Miss Antonie Velleman and K. A. Bowen. Miss Mary Sharp will stage this act. Tryon Loses Two Tryon boys and girls high schobl basketball teams lost to the Dun can, S. C., teams Tuesday night at Duncan. The girls’ score was 14-12; the boys’ 25-28. 52 PAGES Est. 1-31-28
