C., TUESDAY, JULY 30, 1935 Saluda Player Makes Good With Chicago Through the kindness of Henry Haijrington of Brampton, Mich., we have a squib and cartoon of Walter Stephenson, formerly of Saluda but now of the Chicago Cubs. Art Ward writing in the Chicago Tribune says, “Wally 'Stephenson, who comes from one of the Carolinas (It doesn’t mat ter which), stands up in the dug out and bares his head every time “Dixie” is played on the canned music device at Wrigley Field.” This is Walter’s first year in the Major League and he is said to be making good as a catcher for the Cubs. H has gotten in a few games as pinch hitter and last re ports showed him batting over 300. Chamber Commerce Meets on Wednesday President S. T. Wood announces that the Tryon Chamber of Com merce will holds its annual meeting s n Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock x Missildine’s Hall. Reports of the year’s work will be given and all citizens interested in the fu ture of Tryon are urged to attend this meeting as matters of impor tance will be discussed. Raleigh, July 29—James H. Pou, one of the outstanding law yers of North Carolina, died at his home here this morning at 9:40 after being in poor health for several months. Advise Postponement School Opening Date Raleigh, July 29. Postpone ment of public school openings scheduled for September was ad vised today by Dr. J. C. Knox, state epidemiologist, who saiid the expected seasonal decline of infan tile paralysis»may be so slow as to make it advisable for the institu tions not to begin their fall terms until October Ist. Peaceful Solution To Be Sought London, July 29. At Kiwanis Today Another picnic f(or the whole community was discussed today and a committee appointed comnosed of Hoyt O. Prince, W. E. Kilpin, L. A. AVant and C. J. Lynch. The Kiwanis wheel chair which is loaned from time to time to in valids is to be repaired. Among the current events items offered by the Secretary was one from this week’s Polk County News which states that the Kiwanis purebred pigs donated to 4-H club boys are increasing in number and are being distributed to worthy boys all over the county.
