Bird who passed away Tuesday morning: McNeely’s Cash Store, Jackson’s, Ballenger Co., Exclusive Ladies Shop, Arledge Hardware, Kell Furniture, Farm ers Federation, Cowan’s Grocery, City Market, Duke Power Co., Buchanan’s 5&10c Store, Andrews & Swann, A&P Tea Co., Ballew’s Grocery, Avant Electric Co., Blue Ridge Weavers, Missildine’s Phar macy, Slack’s Pharmacy, Peeler’s, Massenburg, McCown & Arledge, Wood’s Press, Tryon Beauty Shop, Attorney J. Lee Lavendar. Mrs. Bird with her husband, op erated the Betsy Bird Antique Shop in Tryon for the past ten years and prior to that they were in the hotel and grocery business. Their business interests were varied and extensive throughout (this section. They made many friends and contacts that carried them on week-end visits to histori cal landmarks in search of beait tiful and rare antiques that bore the marks of skilled craftsmen and artists of the past. They brought these treasures to Tryon and dressed them up for exhibition so that all Tryonites, rich and poor, could enjoy them as they would a visit to an art gallery. Mrs. Bird, through her work, has made a valuable contribution to the life of the community and in many homes throughout the nation has preserved for generations to come treasures of the past that instill a love for the beautiful and the spirit of the pioneer. TRYON, N. C., WEDNESDAY. JAN. 20, 1937 St. Luke’s Hospital Board Elects Its Officers for Year The Board of Trustees of St. Luke’s hospital held its annual meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital. Three trustees, Mrs. Bernard Sharp, Mr. Julian Cal houn and Mr. H. L. Shelnutt were elected to succeed themselves. Officers elected were Julian Cal houn, president; J. C. Kimberly, vice-president; H. L. Shelnutt. treasurer and Samuel A. Bingham, secietary. Dr. David Edsall was appointed Honorary Consultant to the medical staff. Plans for the erection of the new Nurses’ Home, the gift of J. C. Kimberly, were discussed, and other important business transacted. " # An enthusiastic garnering of 300 Scouters met Tuesday night at Gastonia for the annual meeting of the Piedmont Boy Scout Coun cil. Those going from Tryon were Council Vice - President Nelson Jackson, Jr., Council Camp chair man, Major Bernard Sharp, Coun cil Health and Safety chairman. Dr. A. J. Jervey, Tryon Scoutmas ter W. A. Schilletter, Dr, George Farrand Taylor, head of the Boys club, Dr. C. Arthur Lincoln, a leader of the Tryon Young Men’s Assn., Rev. John A. Pinckney, member of the Polk County Court of Honor and a former Scoutmas ter, Nelson Jackson. 111.. Tryon Eagle Scout and Assistant Scout master, Seth M. Vining, Polk coun ty vice-president.
