Most fights usually start with unpleasant words . . . Western North Carolina has had the worst weather in oyer 20 years. Buses from Asheville to Spartanburg and Charlotte did not run last night. All schools in the county _ are closed this week. Another cold wave is expected Friday. State Treasurer Chas. M. Johnson, and candidate for governor, advocates issuance of bonds to construct all-weather farm to market roads .... A group of Hender sonville citizens have applied for a charter for a new bank . . . L. B. Prince and R. L. Whitmire are among the promoters . . . Brandon P. Hodges of Asheville has an nounced for state treasurer .... Inflation seems to be over as food prices continue downward . . . 939 persons in North Carolina lost their drivers license during Janu ary for driving while drunk. A lot of people still don’t believe that alcohol and gasoline won’t mix well. They have to try it . . . The mayor of New York has heart trouble ac cording to his doctor. And a cam paign is now on for funds to fight --Continued on Back Page SALUDA NEWS By Miss R. E. Blatr Saluda is in the middle of the third week of snow and ice. The streets and roads have been par tially cleared but neither walking j or riding is especially comfort able. | The Saluda Book Club met with I Mrs. D .W. Pace on Tuesday. About a dozen members attended, I making their way through snow, ! which in some places was from six to eight inches deep, on the level. | The meeting was a specially pleas • ant one. Being a mid-winter ses | sion, there was a special program, i beginning with a "delightful dinner served by the hostess at 12 o'clock noon. After a short social period followed by the regular business meeting, Mrs. J. H. Clippard read from the Omnibus Book Magazine the article, “Modern Woman; the Lost Sex”, which brought forth considerable comment. There will be no service at the Episcopal Church on Sunday, ex cept Sunday school at 10 a. m. Mrs. D. J. Wilkinson and little son, David, of Asheville were guests ! of Mrs. Fred Pace last week. The Booster’s Club reports that there has been some inquiry about 1 the purchase of land for a chil 1 dren’s home in Saluda. It will require about 100 acres. The Boosters will be glad to hear from ^anyone who has land -they would donate, or sell for a low price. Children from North and South Carolina would be eligible. BASKETBALL TONIGHT Tryon High School and Green Creek will play basketball tonight at Green Creek at 7:30. Tryon players will meet at the Tryon gym at 6 o’clock.
