'Save Our Youth' Benefit J Concert to be Held Tuesday By MARX R. MOSS Chronicle Staff Writer A free concert for the benefit of the city's youths will be held at 7:30 p.m. on April 8 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The concert, sponsored by Save Our Youth ? Crusade 2000, an organization of several groups of outreach youth ministry work ers, will feature renowned gospel saxophonist Venard Johnson. The concert will also feature a citywide youth mass choir under the direction of David Allen. "We just want to reach out to them (youths)," said Cheryl Harry, a member of the concert steering committee. "We want to reach out to children who don't traditionally go to church." In a letter sent to ministers,, city officials and other concerned citizens in January, members of the Save Our Youth organization said that "our city is in serious trouble. There are gangs everywhere, drive by shootings are increasing every day, drugs and crime are taking over the city, rapes are happening in the schools and on school buses, suicides are increasing and vio lence is everywhere you look." Johnson is credited with popu larizing tljp saxophone in churches throughout the world. Currently living in Ft. Worth, Texas, Johnson is also credited with "winning the lost for Christ" through his music. He has performed before high ranking officials throughoutjhe world and has appeared witty such personalities as Billy Graham, Ben Vareen and former presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. . Johnson earned a bachelor s degree in niusic education from Kansas State Teachers College, a master's degree in church music from Southwestern Baptist Theo logical Seminary and, from the same institute^, doctorate of musi-^ cal arts. Johnson said that those youths at the concert who accept religion " will be sent to one of the many churches affiliated with Save Our Youth. . Lifestyles is not a diet program. It is a support group for those- of us wanting to make nutritional and fit ness changes, but who are unsure if we can make these changes alone. This program will help you limprove your health through exer cise, education, motivation and nutrition. Among the topics of the weekly sessions: which fitness strat egy is best for you. the psychology of weight management, self-aware ness, and nutrition. Beginning April 6, join us Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the YWCA at 1201 Glade Street. Pack a lunch if you would like: Enrollment is free for YWCA mem bers and $10 for others. Holy Week ? The St. Peter's World Outreach Center is holding a speciaL"Holy~ Week" service Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the church. The church will conduct its annual "Giant Easter Fling" from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday. April .1 on the grounds of the church. located at 3683 Old Lexington Road. Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to attend, and will be enter tained by puppets, clowns, games, prizes; and an egg hunt. The goal for EGGStravaganza 1 994-is-to raise- - over $10.(X)0. Proceeds from the auction ben efit Science Opportunities for Underprivileged youth. Over $8. (XX) was raised from the two previous 50 children will benefit from scholar ship and membership funds. To date, more than 200 eggs have been sent to celebrities, politi cians. artists and sport figures. Fash ion designer Bill Blass has sent a particularly beautiful egg filled with rhinestones in an Easter basket. Dale Earnhardt has filled his egg with lug nuts from his race car and David Letterman has displayed his artistic talents.
