The plant—which will be big enough to make more electricity than all the former Tide Water Power Company territory uses— will be situated on. the east bank of the Cape Fear River, about five miles north of Wilmington, in New Hanover County. The site is an isolated spot long accessible only by water. The work of cutting a road into the area has begun, and rail lines will be extended to the site before the plant begins operations. Completion of the project, which will contain the largest single gen erating unit in the Carolina Power & Light Company system, is sche duled for mid-1954. Materials have been on order since May 1951. Principal speaker for the ground breaking ceremonies will be Con gressman F. Ertel Carlyle of Lum berton, Representative of the sev enth district. He will be introduced by Hargrove Bellamy of Wilming ton, a CP<ScL director. Mayor E. L. White of Wilming ton will act as maStCT of ceremonies and the 75-piece Wilmington High School junior band will play a 30- minute concert, beginning at 11 o’clock. The formal program will com mence at 11:30 with an invocation spoken by' the Rev. Randolph L. Gregory, pastor of the First Bap tist Church of Wilmington. Louis V. Sutton of Raleigh, pres ident of Carolina Power & Light Company, will describe the new plant and will operate a steam shovel for the ground-breaking. Ap propriately, the ground to be bro ken will be at the edge of the Cape Fear River, from which the first unit will pump 86,400,000 gallons of water each day for cooling pur poses alone. That’s enough w’ater to‘supply Wilmington for 16 days. Like its water consumption, other statistics on the new unit run to phenomlnal figures. For example, it will produce three-quarters of a BILLION kllowatthours of electri city per' year, if operated. 85 per cent of the time. It will accumulate a pile of coal worth over a million dollars to in sure an uninterrupted supply of fuel. Operating at capacity, the unit will consume 15 railroad cars of coal each day, or enough to heat the average home, for 138 years. The boiler will be as high as a 17-story building, and its smoke stack will be 200 feet high. Public officials, newspaper men, radio newsmen and civic and busi ness leaders from the territory for merly served by the Tide Water Power Company have been invit ed to attend the ceremony.
