Gene ral Assembly. + + + Since it is a “vital service” like fire and police protection, County Commissioner Bob Walton said Monday he favors free ambulance for all citizens of Mecklenburg County. He said, “We don’t pay (on an individual basis) for police and fire. Why should we pay for ambulance service? It’s a vital service too.” + + + Charlotte’s public schools are slowly becoming re-se gregated, according to enroll ment statistics released on Tuesday. While the precentage of blacks enrolled in the Char lotte-Mecklenburg School Sys tem has increased by less than one percent since September of 1976, up to 36.3 percent, seven additional schools have gained majority black student populations. The second program is “The Job of the Controller” Oct. 27 •• 28 at the Sheraton Center. The maintenance program is designed to help managers extend the life of equipment, increase safety, cut down on “emergency" repair calls, make more effective use of maintenance personnel and spare parts, and to reduce equipment downtime. The se minar director is Robert R. Ruhlin, director of the engi neering management division of Syska & Hennesy, Inc. The program for controllers is planned to help controllers and financial executives or ganize controllership tasks so that they can be performed finnnnrii'iDoow systematically, purposefully and with a high probability of achievement. For further information, call Dr. John Moore in Contin uing Education at UNCC, 597 2424. ueaoime set t or Absentee Ballots Bv Deborah Catee Me WhitA caiH that ac nf Post Staff Writer According to Glenda White, absentee supervisor for the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections, the deadline for the return of absentee ballots for the 1977 primary election is Monday, September 26 at 5 p.m. The deadline for a re quest for an application of absentee ballot was Wednes day, September 21. According to Ms. White, voters may mail their ballots in to the board of elections, 710 East 4th Street, may come by and bring it in, or send it by someone. “Just as long as we receive it by September 26 at 5 p.m.," she said. >000000000000000* September 15, 59 ballots have been sent out and 34 have already returned. She said many ballots come in close to the deadline and she is still ex pecting many more. As ol the same time last year, 85 ballots were sent out and 82 came back on or before the deadline. Ms. White said that all ballots must be notorized be fore their return. She said that many people do not get their ballots counted because they didn’t get them back by the deadline.
