DENTAL HINTS Brought to the Community by Spurgeon W. Webber D.D.S. Special to the Post ^ Patients9 Total Bill Wm Dr. Webber 'WUBM Dentists are frequently questioned - often quite hoshlely - about why the cost of dental-care is so much higher than it used to be. Some people have the attitude that dental fees have risen out of proportion to everything else. Increases in consumer goods costs have been quite drSiiatic across the board, since the base-line year of comparison (1967); housing 235 percent, food 237 percent, automobiles 166 percent. The average is 223 percent, while health care as a whole has increased 244 percent. However, much of this difference is due to consumer goods prices being based on items that were available in 1967 at less cost, while a part of the increase in health care has been generated by new developments in technology that was not even available in the 60s. The chances of saving many of her natural teeth would be much greater today than back then. The same patient’s total bill for extracting all of her teeth and obtaining dentures n 1967 would probably been in the area of $300., depending on where in the country she was living. But, to restore her own teeth, and retain as many as possible today - depending entirely on the case and condition of the teeth and gumes - might cost $1,000 - $3,000. And again, location in the country would be a factor. The point is, that while the cost is greater in 1980 than in 1967, the treatment now is far more sophisticated, much more involved, but the results far more beneficial; the patient who can keep her own teeth, after restoration, has fee advantages this offers, and the great satisfaction of having esthetical ly presentable teeth of her own. In dental treatment today, the patient does have a choice he-she may not be able to exercise in other health care areas. The choice of materials to be used in restoration of the natural teeth. Your dentist will exflgin options as to materials, the difference in cost forVach type, and probable life expectancy of the work he will accomplish for you, thereby allowing you to structure costs around your ability to pay.
