Black Attendance At Private Colleges Up 40 Percent Blacks today feel that a real investment is sending their child ren to college. Students now in private colleges come from fami lies with lower real family incomes than those who applied in 1976. The median income of these families has declined 13 percent since 1976. The number of Blacks attending private college has increased. The number is up 40 percent from 1976. Last year 12.8 percent identified themselves as minority students; 51.1 percent being classified as Black, 19.4 percent Hispanic-Ame rican, 20.4 percent Native-Ameri can, and 10.6 percent Asian-Ame rican. + + + + 'With Teresa Burns , Bits & Pieces Teresa TIME magazine introduced a fact about cancer in Blacks that is rather shocking. Morrow, Secretary of the N.C. )epartment of Human Resources. Participation in this project, ntitled Start-Up Project, will be i mi ted to non-profit day care roviders and public agencies. It /ill be administered by the Day ?are Section of the department. Criteria have been established l ir identifying counties most in i eed of help to start up day care rojects. Sixteen counties have Ben designated as target coun bs for the project. They are eaufort, Bladen, Cabarrus, towan, Columbus, Currituck, ranville, Halifax, Hertford, arthhampton, Onslow, Pasquo nk, Pender, Perquimans, irrell and Washington. Application from these counties 11 be solicited and be given eferential treatment. Day Care ction staff will be available to irk with groups from these coun s who are interested in making plication for funding. Vpplication from other counties II be considered in the event that plications from “target” coun s are insufficient in quantity or quality to use all the funds avail able. Criteria for ranking individual applications include such factors as the degree of need for addi tional day care services within a county, the cost-efficiency of an application and written endorse ments from community leaders and groups. As for Black women with breast cancer the survival rate is 49 percent - for white women survival is 68 percent if they have breast cancer j So why do whites outlive Blacks when it comes to cancer? Is it better living conditions - better treatment?
