DENTAL TS ; Brought To The Community By Melnesa Harris. Dental Hygienist Dentist Are Real People Heaven forbid that all dentists should be the same, because if they were, then it would follow that all other categories of professions and occupations would have sameness. Can you imagine where we’d be if all U.S. Presidents had been the same? Dentists are real people, behind whatever facade they seem to project and, so being, each dentist will have individualized interpre tations of his profession, its pro cedures and techniques. The roost common complaint heard about dentists is that they are, generally speaking, too stiff and formal, too fast-working and quiet, and often give the patient the impression his-her case is almost terminal. In short, some dentists scare the patient to death with silence and stonefaced approach. Probably most guilty of a too stera outward show to patients are the dentists from the “old school.” They were taught that the profes sional office was no place for unnecessary humor and frivolity. And, they found through experi ence they could get a lot more work done by paying strict attention to business, it wasn't an attitude of “the patient be damned,” but just a serious approach to a serious business. But this was before realization of the importance of the “power of positive thinking.” And before the healing sciences learned that much of a patient’s fears could be minimized by the doctor. Patient understanding, it was learned, helped greatly in his-her reaction to treatment, and the overall re sults of the treating effort. So, while today’s dentists are usually alike in their more tho rough understanding of the patient’s needs, and how to cope with those needs, they are still different in that they are indivi duals, even as office managers, airline pilots and bankers are all individuals. The point is, you surely can find the type of dentist you like, if you try. The only sameness you should notice today is that each will want to restore your oral health to its full potential, with congeniality and openness you probably have never known in the past.
