7B RELIGION/trtie Cliarlotte Thursday, January 11, 2007 Black Jesus stirs controversy in ‘The Color of the Cross’ Continued from page 6B mind. First AME Zion Church in Los Angeles was one of the main backers of the movie and the church’s pastor is listed as one of the film’s producers. “The T.D. Jakes of the world were very tepid about the movie,” LaMarre said. Instead of dwelling on those types of attitudes, LaMarre said they just kept it moving and, worked on the DVD release, pay per view rights and other things that will insure that the movie will be seen on many screens. “Even if they didn’t want to see it, the movie will pop up on a screen soon,” he said. The movie is available at all retail outlets, such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and can be ordered online at VTww.blackchristianmovies.c Life story, struggles of first recognized black U.S. priest are unkown to most Be a good neighbor: Tell a friend you read it in ®[ie (Ojarlirtte (704) 376-0496 Continued from page 6B was one of many slaves who escaped to join the North’s Union army and fight for black freedom—and who died battling for that cause, according to Hemesath’s book. Augustine, along with his mother, Martha Jane, and his two siblings, escaped across the Mississippi River to Illi nois, frantically rowing a boat while ducking gunfire from the South’s Confederate army. Eventually, they land ed in Quincy, IHinois, where Martha Jane, Augustine and his brother Charley worked in a tobacco factory. Tblton met priests and nuns throughout his life who helped him, including some who taught him to read. Oth ers, however, were angry that a black boy was being educat ed with whites and tried to stop him from realizing his dream of becoming a priest. After years of rejection by U.S. seminaries, pleas on his behalf from sjmipathetic Catholics finally allowed Iblton to study in Rome, lead ing to his ordination in 1886, when he was 31. Tblton had hoped to become a missionary in Africa as an escape from American racism. Instead, he was assigned to a church in Quin cy and later Chicago—a bit ter disappointment that he nonetheless dutifully accept ed. He went on to face more hardship and resentment, and little financial support for the black churches he oversaw. “If anybody had an excuse to leave Ihe Catholic Church, it was him,” says Harold Burke-Sivers, a deacon in a Portland, Oregon, parish, who is also African-American and who wrote the introduc tion to the newly issued biog raphy. But Tblton recognized that Catholics who discriminated against him were violating church teaching on the digni ty of aU people and he dedi cated himself to changing that, says Burke-Sivers. Tblton was credited with becoming a unifying force for black Catholics, especially in Chicago. “Good Father Gus,” as his parishioners often called him, was known for his eloquent sermons, his beauti- fiol singing voice and his gift for playing the accordion. He was 43. Burke-Sivers believes Tblton’s story is still rele vant—not only for black Catholics. ‘Yoimg people can look to Father Augustine’s legacy and be inspired—and be able to say, ‘If he could do it, so could I,” Burke-Sivers says. At the same time, some wonder what Tblton would think about the struggles black Americans still face inside and outside the church. Only about 4 percent of the 64 million Catholics in the United States are black, according to an estimate by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, Just last month, New Orleans Archbishop Alfred Hughes issued a wide-rang ing pastoral letter decrying racism and acknowledging the problem still exists in the church. “After all these years, noth ing really has changed,” says Adrienne Curry, managing editor of the Black Catholic Chicago Web site, who also works for the Archdiocese of Chicago. ‘T think Father Tblton would be saddened but hopeful at the same time—just like we are.” On ihe Net: Tolton history: hftp'J/www.quincy.edu/inf ormation/hisfory/tolton.html Hire Millionaire Favor Keynote Speaker Motivational • Inspirational! “60 Minute Presentation'’ Only $1,500.00 Call 919-889-7747 A The Charlotte Chapter of GMWA Gospel Music Workshop of America 'Pnoductioft " Under the Leadership of Musical Director, Ted Martin Song Writers, Soloist and Musicians Interested in participating in this project, please join us Saturday, January 13, 2007, 1pm New Emmanuel Congregational Church in Christ 3546 Beatties ForcfRoad, Charlotte, NC 28216 Rev.
