Threi Sucgcstions Which Deserve Care ful Consideration. There appears to be no end to the Suggestions as to how to improve our highways, nor should the agitation of the subject cease until better ways are adopted ways that render our roads passable at all seasons of the year so far as mud is concerned. To this end I have a few suggestions to make: 1. His absolutely essential that the roadbed be dry. In order to frunran- 1 tee this a tile drain must be lai 1 in all low level places. I would lay the tile in the center of the road. 2. For the time bidn.-r our roads will be made by throwing up the earth into the center. Let this be d..ne iu a we!l- . v- S THE EFFKCT OF NARBOW-WIIEEI. OX A DIRT ROAR "TIKF.S rounded form, but not too wi le, and nicely smoothed and roundel up. sc that water will run off freely into the side drains. S. Do away with the narrow tire on our vtapm wheels. The difference in the power necessary to haul a wajron with wide tires on hard, smooth roads over the narrow tire is so trilling that it would scarcely be perceptible Were the three suesti ns 1 have . named adopted and praetie-.l I an sure there would be far less complaint of bad roads. The practice heretofo.-e of scrapinjr xip the earth with a com mon scraper and dumped in piles and left so is not making roads brU-er, only worse; and no man is fit for roa l supervisor who does not know better than to leave a road in such a con dition. Iet whatever is doac on the roads be well done- 1 know i f my owa personal knowledge by experience in making roads that should the sug gestions I have made as 'o d.-ainare, proper construction and wide tire b? adopted wc would have comparatively good roa is, even when made from the earth. 1 throw out these su.jet';oas novtf as the time will s.h.h )v here when we will Is? called on to work the reads. This can only be done with a roller, constructed on the principle of tiia tempering wheel u- ej ia the old tim3 brick yards, which roUer should bo made with narrow steel tires with snaces between. A heavy roller con structed on this plan would render the road hard and smooth. Notice how i the bottoms of ponds tiro mad.; water tight by the trampling of bogs and cat tle, and other animals having split hoofs. This could not be done by the fret of horses and mules, they having solid hoofs compress" the surface and leave the clay uiidisturl ed a fvw inches below, as docs our common road roller.
