P©RT CAGE Edited By John I. Anderson Rambling With The Sports Editor ■t QUITE A SQUABBLE ... It is interesting to note the verbal Itattle, between the sports writers of the Asheville papers and the Waynesville Mountaineer. Last week the Asheville Times in its week ly round-up and rating of WNC basketball teams rated the powerful Waynesville club in seventh place, while the Canton team was rated ■fifth—even though the Bears had suffered three defeats, while Waynesville was undefeated. We quote from the Mountaineer: *Nwr that the Swift steamrollers have flattened the Bears, we’ll be anxious to see how the Mountaineers fare in the ratings this week.” Then we noted on Tuesday morning a big spread in the Asheville ‘daily that Waynesville is now knocking on the Blue Ridge conference •dear. And so we’ll let ’em battle it out: We have our problems too. We’re appreciative of the way the Charlotte Observer handled the GD Coan-Eddie Yost story and pics, but we cant say the same for our WNC neighbor. TO SIGN CONTRACT .. . Last week we reported that Gil Coan had ■received his contract to play for the Washington Nationals, but had re turned it to Owner Clark Griffith unsigned. Monday Gil received it back, and says he is signing, since he was promised to get the same as last year should he do any good at all. Down to a 175 and in the best phys ical condition ever, Coan should have his best season in ’54. And those are the sentiments of all Transylvania! SEE WIZARD IN ACTION . . . Local fans will have the oppor tunity to see one of the classiest basketball players in this area in ac tion Saturday night in a game between Enka and Pelzer. Earl Wooten, the manager of the Pelzer Mills team is the scoring leader in the Tex tile league with an average of nearly 40 points a game. In fact, he has maintained an average of over 30 points a game for the past four years in this league. In a recent game he made 63 points. Incidentally Earl is about 5-16. Legion Back On Top In Local Bowling Race, Stars Listed Jim Avery Has High Games And Set To Lead Legion naires To Win The American Legion bowlers have jumped back into first place lead in the Brevard bowling league after defeating Biltmore Dairies flaree straight games during tht|f {vast week of bowling. Jim Avery gets credit for being the big gun in the legionnaires’ win by rolling games of 216, 210 and 194, for a 620 total. Ed Lass had a 507 set for the winners. Barnett’s Machine Shop is in sec ond place with a record of 31 wins and 20 losses, two games behind the legion, and Brunswick won ov er Barnett’s to the tune of 2-1 on Monday night. For the winners, Pete Wright had a 199 game, and Earl Sorrells had a 208. For the losers, Lanning had a 210 line. The Rotary club pulled a mild upset, taking two out of three from Sam’§ Drive-In. For Sam’s, the fol lowing had best sets: Paul Simpson 514, Clyde Galloway 510 and R. Lan dreth 502. PICK ’EM FAT Dan Cupid’s latest advice: Pick ’em fat, boys. It’s a lot easier to live with 200 pounds of curves than with 100 pounds of nerves.
