Frank Goad Clement, 33, Nashville, Governor of Tennessee, for leadership and contributions to the general welfare of the people. Walter Horace Carter, 32, Tabor City, N. C., newspaperman and publisher, for his Pulitzer Prize-winning public service in fighting the Ku Klux Klan. Albert Schatz, 33, Falrlawn, N. college professor and research worker, for his discovery of the wonder drug Strepto mycin. Dr. Bernard J. Miller. 35. Laverock, Pa., surgeon and medical scientist, for unusual leadership In the field of medicine, Including work in developing a mechanical heart and lung. Representative for hi3 espionage and sabotage work during World War IL Dr. Lloyd Thomas Koritz. 26, Rochelle UL, Doctor of Medicine, for risking his Life to develop new techniques in artificial respiration. Sgt Hiroshi Miyamura, 28, Gallup, N. M., winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor, for unusual brav ery and devotion to duty as a soldier in the Korean War and as a prisoner of the Communists. Carl T. Rowan, 28, Minneapolis news paper reporter, for unusual contributions to journalism, Including articles and books on racial prejudice. The annual selection is restricted to men between the ages of 21 and 36 (Central Press) Charter Members Of Kiwanis Club To Be Honored Friday Others Belonging To Club When Organized In 1926 Also Invited Anniversary night will be ob served by Brevard Kiwanis club at its meeting here Friday evening at 7 o’clock in Gaither’s Rhododen dron room, when charter members of the club will be honored. In addition to present members of the club who were on the char ter list when the club was organ ized in 1926, former members who have dropped out of the organiza tion will also be invited guests. Records of the club show that first president of the Brevard Ki wanis group was Wm. E. (Bill) Breese: Robert E. Lawrence, secre tary, and Randall W. Everett, treasurer. During the meeting perfect at tendance recognition will be given Jim Aycock, Frank Bridges, Wayne Conn, C. M. Douglas, Melvin Gil lespie, Lewis Hamlin, Ray Hooper, Duncan Hunter, Don Jenkins, The odore Reid, Harry Sellers, Hugh Sigmon, Paul Tindall and Dr. Fred Zachary. Each of these members have attended all meetings of the previous year. Check-up will also be made on the sale of Brevard advertising auto plates which is a project of the club for benefit of the scouting program. Each member of the club has tags for sale. INFANT DIET The two mothers on the bus held children of about the same age in their laps and were chatting affably about the achievements of their re spective offspring. “Mine is eating solids now,” said one of the proud mothers. “So is mine,” said the second with a knowing smile, “newspapers, pencils, bobby pins, keys, etc.” TRY TIMES WANT ADS Special Singing At Enon Church Is Planned Sunday By AGNES W. MERRILL PENROSE — A special singing in honor of Miss Betty Sue Wil liams, polio victim, will be held at the Enon Baptist church this Sun day, January 24, at 2 p. m. Miss Williams will be honor guest and all proceeds will go to the March of Dimes. This is an annual event and ev eryone is invited. There will be several groups of singers, such as the Chappell sis ters from Hendersonville, the Rob erts family from Asheville and many more. There will be no charge, but a free will offering will be taken to go to the polio fund in honor of Betty Sue. STUDY COURSE PLANNED A study course “Studies In Psalms,” will begin at Enon church next Monday night, January 25, at 7:30 p. m., with Rev. Ralph Ban ning teaching the book. Everyone is urged to take this as it is a very interesting and helpful book. YWA MET The YWA’s of Enon church held their last meeting last Wednesday night, January 13, at the home of Mrs. Pauline Landreth. There were 10 members present for the meet ing. It was decided at the meeting to meet on Monday nights instead of on Wednesday. The next meeting will be held at the home of Miss Barbara Talley. PENROSE P-TA MET The Penrose P-TA held their January meeting on Tuesday night, January 12th, at 7:30 p. m., with the president, Mrs. W. W. Westall, presiding. Rev. John Neal, of Little River, was in charge of the devotionals. Parent count was carried out and it went to Mrs. Fannie Hayes’ room for having the most parents pres ent for the meeting. After the bus iness part of the meeting a play was given by Mrs. Hayes’ fifth grade and was enjoyed very much by all. PERSONAL ITEMS We send our deepest sympathy to Rev. Ralph Banning's family on loss of his father, who passed away last week. Mrs. H. C. Enloe was called to Charlotte last Thursday by the death of her cousin. We wish to ex tend to her our sympathy. Mrs. Nora Simms is visiting rela tives in Hendersonville. Mack Whitmire, 80, Buried In Texas Word has been received here of the recent death of Holbert Mc Donald (Mack) Whitmire, 80, in Belton, Tex. Funeral services were held in Belton and burial was in Nolan Valley, Tex. Whitmire was born in Brevard, March 24, 1873. He went to Texas shortly thereafter with his family and made his home in Nolan Val ley until eight years ago when he moved to Belton. He was married to Miss Carrie Lee Orr, of Transylvania county, in January, 1901. He had been a mem ber of the Baptist church some 40 years and was active as a deacon. Survivors include the widow, four sons, Seth of Abilene; Donald Lath ager and Lathayer, of Belton; and five daughters, Mrs. G. W. For hand, Mrs. Ariiss Nichols, Mrs. Vera Blair of Belton; Mrs. John Eisner, and Mrs. James Eisner of Houston; one brother, Johnnie Whitmire of Rosman; and a large number of nieces and nephews of Rosman.
