7 Pops Concert At Music Center Takes Wry Look At Serious Music By • Clifford Chalmers Anyone blundering by acci dent into Whittlngton-Pfohl Auditorium at the Brevard Music Center last Saturday evening would have done a double-take indeed. Especial ly if he or she hadn’t been able to obtain a program be forehand to learn what was being played. That first selec tion sounded a little like a symphony, but . . . could the orchestra have sounded THAT bad? It was all in jest, of course, part of a musical put-on the Center arranged as part of its Pops Concert series. Entitled “Comedy In Music”, the selec tions showed that there’s a light side even to so-called “serious” music. In Gillis’ “Symphony 514”, for example, the movements are entitled “Perpetual Emo tion”, “Spiritual”, “Scherzo frenia” and “Conclusion”. Conductor Henry Janiec led the BMC Orchestra light heartedly through chords and passages that satirized just about every composer from Beethoven to Bartok. The fine thing about the eve ning was that the more knowl edgeable you were about music, the quicker the laughs and chuckles kept coming. In Mo zart’s “Musical Joke,” then were all sorts of sly digs at the revered Johann Sebastiar Bacb . . . and could it be that old Wolfgang Amadeus was poking a bit of fun at himself too? In “The Worried Drum mer”, composer Montague Schreiner milked lots of humor from the plight of a symphony orchestra drummer bedeviled by boredom and the drummer’s ever-present nemesis of waiting, waiting, waiting. A trio of seductive ladies bent on driving him to distraction during a perform ance made a distinctive hit with the audience. The showpiece of the eve ning, though, was Saint-Saens! delightful “Carnival of the Ani mals”, which featured the duo piano team of Yarbrough and Cowan and the 90-member BMC Orchestra under Dr. Janiec. David Rae Smith, the Broad way and operatic baritone who hails from Asheville, delivered the amusing narration in a win ning fashion. In this work, the orchestra went through the whole me nagerie of creatures, includ ing elephants, birds, kanga roos and even a wild jackass. He stopped in front of several to listen to the comments from the pulpit and finally entered one. After ask ing what made him choose that particular church, he answer ed that when he walked up, be ing read in unison was “We have left undone the things we ought to have done and we have done the things we ought not have done.” He quickly replied that he knew he had found his kind of people and went into the church. Jack Benny was invited to the White House to entertain the President and his family. He was carrying his violin case and the guard, as usual, asked what was in the case. Jack said “Just a machine gun” in his usual expressive way. The gpard said, “thank goodness, I was afraid for a minute it was your violin,” in a very deadpanned voice. A church was having a pot luck supper. The editor of the bulletin made the following announcement, “bring enough pot for your family.” The little boy had been to the principal’s office for four days and on the fifth, the prin cipal said since it was the fifth time what did he have to say for himself.
