Tobacco, Yams, Soybeans Up In Acreage North Carolina farmers intend to plant more tobacco, soybeans, and sweet potatoes in 1975, according to the Federal-State Crop Reporting Service. These findings are based on a survey of farmers intentions conducted around March 1. Results showed flue-cured tobacco acreage increasing 18 per cent over 1974 to 462,000 acres and burley increasing 15 per cent to 10,000 acres. Farmers intend a seven per cent increase in soybeans, placing the 1975 expected plantings at 1,580,000 acres. The survey showed corn acreage decreasing three per cent from 1974 to 1,670,000 acres and grain sorghum holding at last year’s level of 100.000 acres. Acreage planted to oats is expected to total 165.000 acres, down 5,000 acres, and barley at 65,000 acres, also shows a 5,000 acre —decline. Hay acreage for harvest should be about the same as in 1974 — 325,000 acres. Peanut growers indicate they will plant 168,000 acres — unchanged from last year’s plantings. The State’s cotton growers intend to plant only 75.000 acres, a sharp cutback from last gear’s 188,000 acres. Sweet potatoes are expected to be planted on 80,000 acres, an increase of 2,000 acres over last year. When yes think ef prescriptions, think of VARNER’S, adv.
