He was a faithful attachee of his owner in the Confederate war. The reported strike and race riot last week was greatly exaggerated It was a false alarm and the Xaval Reserves who responded to an un authorized call to arms did not reach tne scene oi disturbance, but re mained under arms at the Armory. Dr. R. B. Swindell has returned from a short sojourn in the moun tains, and , we are glad to see . in wreath improved health. But we regret to hear that for considera tion of health he will seek a perm an eut home remote from broad waters Our town, we fear, is on a boom. Xew buildings, rip saws, cotton spindles, foundries, steam and fac- torv whistks, bull frog industries, more mort. are seen and heard on everv hand. Death of the Oldest Native of Eliza- t I beth City! Departed this life in Portsmouth, Va, lay, 15th, Mr. James H. Shan non, aged So years and G months, aviug been born November 4th, 811. - Ir. Shannon was born in Eliza beth City, X. C whence he emigrat ed to Portsmouth early in life and was a brother of William Shannon of our own, deceased, who is remembered jy nearly all of our citizens. Mr. James Shannon was a vener able link of the present and past eneratious and his lineage connects lim with the earliest history of Eliz abeth City. He was a lineal des cendant of Betsy Tooley who owned he water front about where Slr. Robert sons -vharf now is, about 1800, of thus town when it was called he "Xarrows," and traded with the Dismal Swamp shingle getters; hich trade probably originated the w breign trade in shingles to the W est Indies and first gave an im petus to the business of the town. anies Shannon was her descendant, and presumably her grandson, t He was venerable in years, exem- 1: ary in life, and a credit to his na- vitv. His death was not unexpect- d, tho he had battled with thereap- for several weeks, and finally sur rendered to tho relentless victor. I He leaves several children, " one n being a prominent and prosper so ous citizen of St. Louis, Mo. Word or Two on Cycles. We have been studying on Cycles, e've thought and .thought, and onl v one thought we are sure ol. u time, and a short time, a man on frtnf. nn our boulevards, will be as vj"sot T Teat a curiosity as a catamount or Royal Bengal Tiger. All the and all the men and w v v w women njerely cyclers. Yea, and nil the toddlers too. First a tod dlerhappy as a coon, graceful as fawn,- agile a3 a kitten. bee h eir little toesesM playing in and ou like little white mice peeping from under a damask gown. They cannot walka'foot, but guide the wheel as helmsmen do the rudder. Were wo a'toddler we'd be a cycler too, and tco a proud and - happy ' one. "Were we an old man we would not bo a cycler for all the ingots in California's golden 'sierras. We'd rather be a '-Jog and bay the moon" t4or a toad and ; feed upon the vapor of a dunireon," than such 9 a dotard. See old rolling like a ; wrecked ship in the trough of the sea, puffing like bellows, working like a dray horse on Poindexter street in a wet and wintry time and cursing our Paps (the horse) in his pent up wrath; and trvincr (old ) tc look happy and fool some body. Oh 'tis a sight to make the angels weep Our sportsmen who. "teach the vouhl' idea how to shoot," say the cvele is not favorable to study Well, be it so. We'd rather be toddler riding on a wheel than Plato, Sophocles or Artistotle, if we didn't know letter B from a Bumblebee. The Nayal Reserves' Bazaar. This most useful military organ i zation and stronghold in the preser vation of the peace and good order of our community and of the peace and good order of the vicinage, will hold a Bazaar at their Armory on June 7th, and will continue a week. Its .object is to provide for the necessary expenses of the company, which are required for its efficiency, It is deservedly popular, prompt. reliable, ready for any emergency and composed, of young men who represent the character of this com munity. At some sacrifice to them selves of time and .money, and without compensation, they respond at a moment's notice to every - call of duty and patriotism, not only in this town but in this vicinity. The company cannot be main tained in its efficiency without material aid, and . therefore they have resorted to this Bazaar for assistance, hoping they will have the aid and co operation of this town and of this section. The Bazaar will be open for a week, and the company will.be grateful to their friends, here and near here, for any contribution that will add to its success. There will be no charge for admission. They respectfully ask contributions of anything that will add an honest penny to the re lief fund of tbeXaval Reserves. .Ices, creams, cakes, fruits, confectionaries, etc., etc., will be thankfully received and duly acknowledged. The val uable and potent aid of the ladies is ardently asked for. Overman's Academy of Music. The Emmit Warren Company have been playing at Overman's Academy of Music during the week to large and appreciative audiences, and here is no dissenting opinion that they aro keeping up their leputation in our community. It is a refined and exouisite1 performance and a decided pleasure. Its fun is side splitting, its pathos touching and its acting throughout is true to na ture. Mr. Overman has been a benefactor to this town in introduc ing this troupe, and if laughter and fat bo close companions and one a cause and the other effect, he has added several hundred pounds of fat to the avoirdupois of our people. We ars gratified that the show has been a success and that Mr. Overman has put money in his pocket by his enterprise and forecaste. Advertised Letters.
