SCHOOLS AND EPIDEMICS. No School Should Close On Account of Epidemic ot Contagious Diseases. Liy Board of Health. The nlan of closing school in case of epidemic of some con tagious disease is the old and in effective way of dealing with such a situation, and was adopted for the reason that there was ap parently nothing else to do. Hut. according to a bulletin recently is sued by the State Board of Health, there i* another way. a scien tific and an efficient mear.s of dealing with an epidemic in school. "In case a 1 school has no nurse or school i physcian," says the bulletin, "a physician's services can be secur ed for the daily examinations while the epidemic lasts and both, parents and the health of -1 ficer or quarantine officer, can ' be notified and the epidemic soon broucht under control." 1 On the other hand, if the ' schools are closed when an out break occurs, the children are turned loose from supervision: ' they mingle freely with one an other in the streets and in each other's homes; they are unwill ing to admit they feel ill for the reason it will be the end of then good time and consequently when one does "come down" ; with the diseases, usually it was | not detected until he had infect ed his brothers and sisters and perhaps his playmates. If the teacher is alert and the health ofHeer on the job, an epidemic can be avoided ir so controlled that there will be no loss of time on the part of the school as a whole. Not for four years has a school of New York City closed on account of an epidemic of a contagious disease : Encouraging Signs. Optimism with reference to 1 the business outlook is spreading. ' From all sections comes the news J that conditions-are constantly im . proving. The following from a circular i issued by the National Cash Reg- J ister Company is indicative of the I optimistic feeling of many busi- I ness enterprises at the present : time: "Merchants everywhere tell our 600 salesmen that business is booming. "Farmers have had two record crops, at big prices, with big de- I mand at home and abroad. "Stocks of manufactured ma terial are short, and labor is in great demand. "Exports largely exceed im ports. "Factories are busy, many working overtime, i "More freight cars are needed, and steamers are taxed to capac ity. "People are living better, and spending their money more freely. "This country has the best | money in the world and more of it than ever before. "Such a combination of favor able circumstances never has oc curred, before, and probably will never occur again.
