(Ladies wore bustles. Nobody swatted the fly. ;Nobody had seen a silo. Nobody sprayed orchards. . Nobody had appendicitis. Nobody wore white shoes. Cream was 5 cents a pint. Cantaloupes were mushmelons. Milkshake was a favorite drink. Advertisers did not tell the truth. Most young men had "livery bills." iYou never heard of a "tin Lizzy." Doctors wanted to see your tongue. Nobody cared for the price of gas oline. The hired girl drew $1.50 per , Aveek. Nobody "listened in" on a tele phone. Farmers came to town for their mail. j Folks said pneumatic tires were a joke. i The butcher threw in a chunk of , liver. J Straw hats were burned instead oi : baled. j There was no sane Fourth or elec tric meters. j Publishing a county newspaper was, not a business. I Jules Verne was the only convert to the submarine, i You stuck tubes in" your ears to hear a phonograph and it cost a dime. MR. ELY HERE Mr. Walter S. Ely,, president of the Ely Construction Company, ar rived here yesterday for a conference with Mr. James Pough, secretary oi the company, and who has charge of the work here, and with Mr. F. B. Tihompson, rfice-pr)esident, in charge of the work at Lenoir. Mi. Ely left this morning on No. 36 for Durham, N. C., where he is just be ginning work on one of the largest stret contracts ever given by any southern city. T. R. AT REPORTER'S DESK He Wjrites on Both Sides the Sheet and Isn't Blue Benciled Kansas City Dispatch in the Mil waukee Journal. Another precedent in the office of the Kansas City Star was shattered Saturday night. The newest "cub" reporter turned in all his copy in longhand, on both sides of the sheet, lines close together and got away with it. V - - ": The reporter is Theodore ' Roose velt. So -far what the; colonel wrote is a mystery, except to tht managing editors. There had been no Roosevelt "by lines" in the Stat up to the late editions, but the of fice boys are hoping that the Sunday edition will have something by the "new guy." They want to see what sort of stuff he turns out. Within an hour after the colonel returned the greetings of a monster crowd he was at his desk in the Star. He peeled off his coat, rolled , up his sleeves, seized paper and pencil and started to work. From then on until lunch nobody paid much attention to the new rt porter and he paid less attention to other people.
