Social News Mrs. Clyde Cannon, Editor Phone 434-M Mrs. Jones Honored With Dessert Bridge To Honor Mr?. Francis Jones, a recent bride, Mrs. Thelma Finley was hostess with a dessert bridge party at her home last Wednesday evening. The home was made festive for the occasion with arrangements of Christmas greenery and lighted ta pers. Two tables were appointed for the bridge game and a delicious sweet course was served the guests on arrival. At the count of scores following bridge Mrs. Mays Flaok was found to be winner of high score prize with second high going to Mrs. Jon es. Miss Frances English received the low score prize. The hostess also remembered Mrs. Jones with a gift of crystal in her chosen pat tern. The guest list for the evening in cluded Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Flack, Miss English, Mrs. Richard Atwell, Mrs. Mary Simmons, Mrs. Ann Haw kins, Mrs. William Neighbors and Mrs. Wayne Suttle. Bridge Club Meets With Mrs. Goldsmith Mrs. Frank Goldsmith was hos tess to members of her bi-idge club last Wednesday with a luncheon and bridge party at her home. The guests arrived at one o'clock and were served a delicious turkey luncheon from individual tables pet up in the living room and ap pointed for the bridge games »fol lowing luncheon. Bridge was enjoyed progressive ly and at the count of scores, on tallies in keeping with the holiday season, Mrs. Eugene Cross, Jr., was awarded high score prize with second high going to Mrs. Joseph Noyes. Mrs. Paul Story received the low score prize. Club members present for the courtesy included Mrs. S. R. Cross, Mrs. Paul Story, Mrs. Eugene Cross, Jr., Mrs. E. P. Dameron, Mrs. S. W. Blanton, Mrs. Sam Yancey, Mrs. C. Harry McCall, Mrs. Neal Morris and Mrs. Joseph Noyes. Coca-Cola Employees Feted At Dinner A. S. Bradford, manager of the' Marion branch of the Coca-Cola Bottling company was host to the employees of the Marion branch with a dinner at the Methodist church hut last Wednesday eve ning. A delicious turkey dinner was enjoyed by 26 employees and their wives, after which Bradford pre sented the employees with bonus checks which are given annually to those working for the company. Decorations in keeping with the holiday season were used. The tables were centered with arrange ments of holly, spruce and tapers. A miniature Sleigh and reindeer adorned the officers' table and a j lighted tree centered the gift j table. ! Mrs. Pete Hollis, president, pre sented Mrs. Arnold Pyatt who led jthe devotional after which a delic jious turkey dinner was enjoyed, j Mrs. Hollis presided over a short I business meeting, following the din ner, and presented several past pre sidents of the club who were spec ial guests at the dinner. Past pre sidents presented were: Mrs. Vir ginia James, Mrs. E. W. Parker, Jr., Mrs. S. R. Perkins, Mrs. Arthur jDitt, Mrs. Wade Britt, Mrs. W. W. Greene, Mrs. Rowe Mauney and Mrs. J. E. Neal Jr. Mrs. J. C. Rabb was aiso a guest. Short reports were heard from i committee chairmen: Mrs. Edna! Earle Stancell, Mrs. W. F. Grant, I Jr., and Mrs. Earl Turner, reported j for the T. B. Seal Sale and Mrs. Ben Epley, chairman of the civic J committee reported on a needy fa mily the committee had chosen to ( help for Christmas. The club voted to help the family as requested. Mrs. Ray Cline, secretary, read a* letter from the State president of the Federated Woman's Clubs, Mrs. Ed Anderson, requesting a do nation for the United Nations In ternational Childrens Emergency Fund. The club voted to send $5.00 for the fund. Mrs. Hollis read a short resume of the life of Mary Stwart who I wrote the collect used by the club after which the program was turn ed over to Mrs. E. W. Parker, Jr., j who presented three club members' for a program of music. Mrs. Everette Carnes, pianist played "The Original Firedance."; Mrs. Ray Cline, soloist, sang "Jesu J Bambino," by Frederick H. Mar tens and Mrs. Carnes and Mrs. Wil- i liam fconley played a piano duet "Tea For tWo," by Vincent You i mans. Gifts were selected from the gift table and presented by number to! those present. Mrs. Parker announced that a dance will be held by the club at the Lake James club house on the evening of December 23 for the club members and their guests. o Christmas Dance Held Friday Evening A dance was held last Friday evening in the Marion Central High School gynasium for the high school sutdents. Mrs. A. S. Brad ford, chairman of the P. T. A. high school grade mothers, was in charge of plans for the dance and was assisted by several of the par ents of high school students. The gymnasium was made fes tive for the occasion with decora tions featuring the holiday theme. A huge lighted Christmas tree stood at one end of the gym and the refreshment table at the other i end. The table was covered with a i beautiful lace cloth, and centered 'with an arrangement of holly, j flanked by candelabra holding ! lighted red tapers. Bunches of red 'and green balloons and garlands of ■ red and green crepe paper extend ied from the balcony rails and ceil ing. Round and square dancing was enjoyed with Richard Poplin and Garland Williams calling the sets for the square dancing. Refreshments of pop corn, mix ed soft drinks and cookies in Christmas designs were served throughout the evening. Chaperons for the dance includ ed Mrs. A. S. Bradford, Mrs. R. W. Proctor, Mrs. Ed B. Housewarming Party Held At Pyatt Home Members of the Wesleyan Ser vice Guild of First Methodist church were hostesses with a housewarming party at the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Py at on Rutherford Road last Satur day evening. Mr. and Mrs. Pyatt and Mrs. B. A. Buff, of Rutherfordton, greet ed the guests at the door, after which Miss Veola Heafner conduct ed them through the house which was beautifully decorated in the Christmas motif. Following the tour of the house the guests were served a tea course, with accessories in the din ing room by Mrs. B. H. Laugh ridge, Mrs. J. C. Raburn, Mrs. Ed. B. Gibson, Mrs. Clyde Cannon, Miss Merttie Anne Cannon and Miss Margaret Ann Pyatt. Approximately 40 guests called between the hours of eight and ten o'clock. Members of the Guild presented the Pyatts with a set of lamps and many other lovely gifts were pre sented by guests who called. 0 Miss Nunn Hostess With Bridge Party Miss Doris Nunn was hostess to members of her bridge club with a party at her home last Friday evening. The Christmas theme was beau tifully carried out in the decorat ing of the home. A lighted Christ mas tree, greenery, poinsettis and lighted tapers were very effective ly used. Following several progressions of play Mrs. Wayne Suttle receiv ed high score prize and Mrs. Fran cis Jones was winner of low score. Miss Nunn and Mrs. Ann Hawkins also presented Mrs. Jones, recent bride, with two china demitasse cups as an honor gift. The hostess served a delightful salad and sandwich course with coffee to the following bridge club members; Mrs. Ann Hawkins, Mrs. D. M. Atwell, Mrs. Richard Atwell, Miss Grace Mitchem, Miss Frances English, Mrs. Francis Jones and Mrs. Wayne Suttle. Contract Club Holds Annual Yule Party Members of the Contract club held their annual Christmas dinner and party Thursday evening of last week at "Tanglewoods", the sum mer home of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Noyes on Lake Tahoma. The guests arrived at six o'clock and were served a delicious turkey dinner from two tables covered with white linen cloths and center ed with miniature trees formed with Christmas balls and flanked by lighted red tapers. The place cards carried out the Christmas motif as did the decorations used throughout the living room. Following the dinner bridge was enjoyed at four tables appointed for play in the living room. When scores were tallied Mrs. Ralph Al exander was winner of high score prize with second high going to Mrs. W. W. Neal, Jr. Those present for the dinner and party included Judge and Mrs. J. Will Pless, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Neal, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Otis Broy hill, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Cross, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Proctor, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Chapter Holds Christmas Party Marion Chapter Number 278 Order of the Eastern Star held its annual Christmas supper and party last Thursday evening in the Masonic hall. Members of the Chapter and their familiefe enjoyed a covered dish supper at 7 o'clock with beau tiful Christmas arrangements of greenery, lighted tapers, and a lighted Christmas tree adding a festive background for the supper, and party. Dr. C. A. Parker gave th<! invocation prior to the sup per. Following the supper Mrs. Dy sart Martin acted as mistress of ceremonies for the party. Mrs. Frank Simpson played Christmas carols for the background music, and the group joined in singing several of the carols. The children present sang "Jingle Bells" led by Miss Mildred Mitchem. Miss Mitch em also sang solos "That's What I Want For Christmas" by Irving Ceasar and as an encore "Oh Holy Night." Mrs. Clyde Cannon told a Christ mas story "The Small One," by Charles Tizewell after which Christmas gifts were presented Mrs. Landis Laughridge, Worthy Matron and S. Dysart Martin, Wor thy Patron, from the chapter. Mrs. J. M. Mackey, District Deputy Grand Matron of the 19th District had also remembered Mrs. Laugh ridge with a gift, which was pre sented at this time. A generous amount of food, clothing and toys were collected for two needy families for Christ mas. Local and Personal Notes of Interest Clifford Davis, of Charlotte, vis ited his parents here last week. o Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Walker will spend Christmas with relatives in Winston-Salem. o Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Hunt spent several days in Charlotte and Col umbia, S. C., last week. o J. Y. Barnes is confined to his home by illness and is reported as being slightly improved. o William Treverton left Tuesday for Marlboro, New Jersey, to visit his son, W. M. Treverton. o Mr. and Mrs. C. W. P. Elliott who has been ser iously ill at the Marion General Hospital was reported Wednesday ! as being greatly improved although he is still ccnfined to the hospital. o Harvey J. Elliott, of Elmington, Virginia, was called to Marion last week by the illness of his brother W. P. Elliot. While in Marion he was a guest of his sister Mrs. Delia Cline. o Dr. and Mrs. George G. Ross and son David, will spend the Christmas holidays at West Palm Beach Flor ida as guests of Mr. and Mrs. How ard T. Ross and plan to return to Marion on January 3, LET EVERY HEART BE GLAD!
