Again, the wage earner must have been either "fully insured" or "currently insured" under this part of the social security program. These terms have been discussed earlier. The amount payable is from $60 to about $250, depending upon earnings. Where death occurred before January 1, 1947 these lump-sum payments go to the widow, widow er, children, grandchildren or par ents in the order named, but if none of these survive then the | lump-sum may be paid to the per sons who paid funeral expenses. Where death occurred on or af ter January 1, 1947, lump-sum payments are paid to the widow, or widower, and only if the spouse was living with the wage-earner at the time of death. If there is no widow or widower, or the spouse was not living with the wage-earn er, lump-sum payments may be paid to the person who paid the fu neral expenses. The claim for lump-sum pay ment must be filed within two years of the wage earner's death. There are some exceptions for servicemen and their survivors, or where the wage earner died out side of the United States. This is the ninth in a series of articles on your Social Security. This the 23rd day of November 1949. EFFIE CANNON McCURRY, Administratrix of the estate of Florence D. Cannon CONSERVATION NEWS By L. B. HAIRR Robert Arrowood recognizing that trees have a place on a good farm program, plans to reforest the thin stand acres in his woodland. Mr. Arrowood is a veteran farm trainee of Glenwood School. He plans to use white pine and short leaf pine seedlings in spot planting his woodlot. The undesireable trees will be removed for wood as it is needed. Thus releasing the pines. Mr. Arrowood says this is one of the several planned Conservation practices that he hopes to apply on his farm next year. W. W. Elliott, who is farming S. M. Yancey's farm on Marion route 3, says that he will soon have all his crops following the contour. He has observed that his tractor pulls the plow easier and burns less gas going around the hill than up and down the slope. Mr. Elliott with as^-l sistance of the Soil Conservation Service personnel, ran contour lin es on forty acres of cropland last iweek. He plans to strip crop farm this field next year. Planting and cultivating up and j down the slope results in large los ses of top soil, gully formation and lower crop yields, according to Mr. Elliott. SAUSAGE CORN CAKES For sausage corn cakes, combine browned hulk pork sausage in a frying-pan with whole kernel corn. Make a thick batter and stir the corn and meal mixture into it. Add about two tablespoons of lard or drippings to the pan in which the sausage was cooked, then drop the mixture by spoonfuls into the hot drippings and brown the cakes on both sides. An increasing number of farmers and small woodland owners are finding Christmas trees a profit able crop, says the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture. Try a Progress want ad.
