The men were not aware of his presence until the mules began to act strangely and in a fright ened manner and the dogs to bark fiercely. Nothing could be seen of the bear that night, however, but in the morning the tracks were discovered and from the size of them the men judged that it must have been a very iarge bear. The dogs were set upon his track, the men following, but after a chase of several miles, the hunt was given up. It is supposed that r.ruin (or Cuff ey as he is called by the colored population) is a resilient of Green Swamp. All the colored folks up that way are busily engaged in get, ting in 'their hogs out of CufTey's way, in case ho should make another raid. ATLANTIC COAST LINE. Cheap excursion tickets to Kaleigh, N. Her forests are filled with timers not equalled by any j County in the State and yet her lands j in xi number of instance, are worth j not more than Q cenis' p.T acre, j owing to the inability of her people to get their timber and produce to mar ket, and that .while the timbei on each acre is worth 'fifty to one hundred dollars. Now this proposed road will traverse every township in the County, save probably one. and according to the judgment of the chief engineer will j have seventy-seven miles in the County j Asa business proposition will it pay ! to subscri)e? The interest on, the j proposed debt will be six thousand dollars per year. And the question naturally arises, what revenue will the County derive from the road? To judge of this we must go to the Records and see What similar railroads pay in the way of taxes. As this road would nearly correspond with the Wilmington, Columbia & Augusta railroad, which runs into Wilmington, and there has its terminal, we will see what that road is assessed for taxation. The road bed, franchise, etc., lying in New Hanover County (not includ ins: real estate, town lots is 11-:919 per mile. At this rate 77 miles of road, etc., would make, an assessment of $917.- 763 which at GO J cents tax, would yield an annual revenue of over six thousand dollars per year, nearer $7,000, which would make the County receive a revenue from the railroad alone, more than enough to pay the expenses incurred. But it will surely follow, so surely as the shadow follows the the suh- stance, that the town property at i Kothp0rt, al the lands alo,,, t.,o lino ot th't t i miles of road will Le enhanced to an amount, two or three ' times their present value, and the j 4 . .1 : a ti. . e i . . uvAeh Aienveu ineroiro.m, us aiso irom r tho railroad .-"'.shops at Southport, and from tho villages which will surely spring up at Easy Hill. Town Creek, Shallotte. Loqkwoods Flly Uridge and i'ine-wav Ferry, will vield the Cuuniy double tho revenue derived from the railroad alone. Now can any citizen, any- lover of our grand old County gainsay this? The hour of Brunswick's deliverance has come, Southport will ho tho great seaport of the smooth which nature always intended it should be, so rally around the banner of progress, conm-et Southport and Chicago, and flrmis wick will yet be the riehest (unty in the State.
