Chapel Hill’s collegiate population will dimin ish as students head home toward work, less reading and maybe a bit of traveling. But Tar Heels aren’t the only students taking a seasonal break. Right now. Orange County parents are rushing to make their children's summer plans, with the ever-pres ent options of camping, sports leagues and swimming pools. For some children, their summer will be spent taking on the role of college scientist, studying subjects such as entomology, archeology, rocket science and astronomy at the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. “We love the camps, and we think they are a real jewel in the crown of Chapel Hill and the campus," said Karen Kornegay, public relations manager for the planetarium. “Kids to be on campus, study here and be surrounded by real collegiate activities... who knows, maybe in a few years they’ll be enrolled and studying the sciences." The camps vary between age groups. Parents can choose between either half- or full-day camps. Campers choosing to go for a half day can attend either from 9 a.m. to noon or from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. >, „ mi. ,n , i IB f* II COURTESY OF MOREHEAD PLANETARIUM AND SCIENCE CENTER Morehead Planetarium and Science Center's 'Lego Lab' camp is one of the planetarium's most popular offerings during the summer. No matter what length of time a camper decides to stay, they will acquire a variety of scientific skills that they will be able to utilize as they progress throughout their education. For middle school students, their skills in analysis and obser vation will be tested in summer programs like the popular “CSI: Chapel Hill.’ Based on the hit TV series, campers will be introduced to the world of forensic science. "Campers will have a mystery and a crime scene to solve and iThr Sailij {Tar Uppl will have to interview suspects," Kornegay said. "Afterwards they will have to record and analyze their data.” Options for the other grade levels include learning about the constel lations and becoming familiar with the physics behind jet propulsion. Anyone interested can get more information on the planetarium's Web site, at www.moreheadplan etarium.org or by calling 962- 1236. Contact the City Editor at citydesk@unc.edu.
