C. mem of the New Tork Cotton Exchange.) :New Tork. March 17. Cotton. The market continued quiet today. An overflow of the river was reported at one point, and predictions were .any thing but favorable. All the morning there was" a surprising absence of cot ton for sale and wnlle the demand was not heavy enough, cotton seemed, to be wanted to hold prices. Either -the tbullw have sold enough and are will ing to let the market take Its course, or there is a lot of May coming from other quarters. We are. Informed from i ini iciiauic ik v jw. ..... ' ask forw the delivery of cotton on May, This Is a very Important piece of news if true. It may be circulated to help the market, but.it came In a way to "give "its uiftdnce lu Its trust worthiness. We would not operate In May cotton. We would only sell Au gust on rood bulges and would not be in a hurry to sell as long as Hool danger exists. No break of import ance can be expected as long as re ceipts are light. The movement must keep small as long as weather Is bad. There is a big long interest concen trated, but no scattered Jnerest of Im portance. As long as the big holders are not willing to. sell, there Is no pressure, at commission houses are pretty well sold out. If receipts fall to . show up .Later in tbe season., this makes a very strong position. But the price Is. a high one at present time and spinners have 'practically with drawn fro mthe market. There are big gambling operations golpg on In all markets and the bulls will keep at It utll some one is badly hurt." For thw present, however, things are quieting down considerably and without a-flood we should have a qult market. As August works toward 94c. this op tion should be sold. .We would only sell on bulges. " Chicago. 111... March. 17. Wheat. There was a little spurt of strength at the start, but the weakness in 'corn started selling although May did not decline below yesterday's low price of 734c. The northwest and Southwest were the best sellers", but offerings were well taken by comlmsslon houses and there wa covering on a large short line for a wealthy outside opera tor. There appeared to be a good buy ing on the large Bra dstreets "decrease, while towards the close the bull ele ment felt encouraged over the large export business that .developed. -We think the market is now in a position to Improve considerably and would favor purchases on all recessions. Corn If was almost impossible to fill orders satisfactorily at the open ing. May selling; at 454c and 444c In different parts of the pit at the same time. The volume of offerings were normous. selling orders appearing: from all directions and there is hardly a question but that large local hold ers have liquidated May very thorough ly but Armour was a buyer of July while Patten covered shorts extensive ly. The Urge . export sales brought about rallies. Should further declines appear, we would favor purchases. New York. March 17. Stocks. The stock market opened generally steady and with the dealings in light volume and almost entirely for professional ac count, and continued extremely dull up to midday. In the early afternoon there was some betterment .In, condi tions tn respect "'both to 'strength and activity. The only features of th day's -situation which seem to attract the slightest attention were the post tlon of the Southern Pacific pool and the prevailing conditions in the money market. Money, on call Vas somewhat easier today and the bulk of the day's transactions took place at and under six per cent. Sterling exchange was again firm, but the one of that market was not.' regarded as sirnlficant. Tha business of commission houses was vir tually at a standstill. The slight re laxation In the monetary situation al lowed the status of. the Southern Pa cific pool to assume, the foremost posi tion in interest. -It Is the general Im pression that the more astute mentberj of that combination have ..during the term of. Its existence, protected them selves fully market wise. The' Southern Pacific company is earning a fair , re turn upon its sapital stock. London was stronger today. The total dealings here for foreign account did not amount to more than 10.000 shares with virtually nothing on the balance. A urther rise in copper was shown In the early cabled advices and all the copper securities were very strong in London. Amalgamated Copper contin ued a feature of the local dealings and other gains In the miscellaneous stocks ere scored in Tennessee Coal and Iftm. The buying ot T. C. I. seemed to be chiefly for short account. ..LittlA was done in Sugar or Steels, and the .t,0(,i frar.nn .t. nit-d transactions In railway shar-s were without special significance. The market closed dull but firm." Totn sales. 411800 shares. ' . " BARBSE & CO lal Haiti via T. A. p. Hallway Account of Southern Educational Conference, Richmond, Va., the S. A L.
