Over a quarter of a century has now passed since the great civil strife ended, and the country has, happily, to a (rreat extent recuperated from the effects of the great strife. Among all nations where civilization exists It has become a custom to revere the memories of those who showed ty gallant and patriotic deeds their de votion to country, homes and fire sides. The cause for which the gal lant South offered so many valuable lives and so much treasure, by a de cree of an overruling Providence, was lost, and, as a people, we have bowed to the decree. It becomes us, how ever, in such a manner as best we can, to commemorate their deeds and let them pass down into history as noble patriots who came to the front to battle for hat they deemed just. In no better manner can we hand down to posterity the noble deeds of our dead heroes than by the erection of a suitable monument to their mem ory. To do this will require funds, and the noble ladies of our State have taken the matter in hand and are now appealing to the generous sym pathy of our people. v Tonight will be opened on Nash square an entertainment in further ance of the end in view. The pros gramme is an interesting one, and aside from the patriotic motives in volved, much enjoyment can be had. On behalf of our noble ladies and the great Cause we all love, we most earnestly appeal to all our people for aid. Let the entertainment bs pat ronized to the fullest extent, so that such a fund may be realized as will be a sou ce of pride to all our people The Pythian Band. We learn that the committee on band for the reception of Gen Stev enson and others in this city on the 16th, inst. have secured the services of the Pythian Band of this city for the occasion. This band is composed of gentlemen in our city, and al though they are not usually open for engagements they have moBt gener ally and in a spirit of patriotism de cided to act on the occasion, on the most reasonable terms, thereby re lieving the committee of th neces sity, of sending elsewhere for music. Their decision will entitle these gen tlemen to the gratitude of all our people, and shows a determination on their pait to add all in their power towards rendering the reception in all respects worthy of the Capital of the -'Old Noith State". For a sample a man will go and buy a pair of shoes with ut kuowing the make of shoe, not knowing the kind of people he is dealing with, not car ing, it seems. The shoes wear out in a short time. Then he' kicks, when he should be kicked. Now we have come to the relief of the kicker. He can come to us; we will sell him a pair of Reynold's shoes and he will be so well pleased with them that the kicking will stop and the name will be stamped upon his memory so plain ly that in the future he will have no trouble, but come at once to Swindell's.
