Aillaace Address. Mr Ben Terrsll , of Texas, a lecturer of the National Farmers Alliance, mad public-address in the interest cf the Order M onday. He showsd tbst merchants have their board of trade, snd railroads, banks, etc, their organisations by which they can unitedly further their interests, and that there existed a necee; ity for similar anion on the part of farmers. He discussed the objects of the Al liance and showed benefits thai had accrued both to the farmers and to the country in general from what had al ready been accomplished by it. He told bow farmers in some plscee who had been running on credit had by using the Alliance worked around to a catb system aad advised them all to do Ilk wise. He favored law to prevent foreign ownership of lands, and advocated government cntrol or ownership of railroad in order to crash out the monopolistic tendencies of the day. Ha brought oat some good idea oa financial q a eat 10ns and used arguments in favor of the sub-treasury bill. Throughout his speech Mr. Terrell poke with a readlneae that showed familiarity with the issues cf thedsy and he held the close attontioa of hie audience for over two hour. At the conclusion of the address, on motion of Mr. ,W. H. Smith, of the Riverdale Alliance, a vote of thanks was extended to Mr. Terrell for the ad dress aad the work he is doiig among the Alliance. meeting will be held in the court hous this morning at 10 o'clock to orgaoixs a district Alliar.ce for this con greaaioaal district. PROTRACTED MEETIXU Cieaed at the Cbtreh ef Christ Thurs day Night. Notwithstanding the meeting was held under somewhat unfavorable circumataaoee, it wa a successful one. Thar ware twenty baptixed during the meeting, and all except five have taken membership with the Church of Christ, aad eleren who had been previously baptixsd took membership, making twenty six that connected themselves with the church. We believe there were many others who were seriously concerned about their souls salvation that did not ac cept Jeeus aa their Saviour. Satan is never mi. but to the contrary is ever watch lag aai working xealously to keep persoos from accepting Cnrist. The devil someti ties goes into the house of Ood aad takss his seat by one who is thinking seriously about Christ, aod whisper, "Wait awhile longer, you have plenty of time." He sometimes denies the truthfulness of the word of Ood, and would offer something else Sometime he would say, "Ood i loo good to send a man to bell." and men often aooept error rather than truth, because they want something to quiet iheir conscience while they are engaged in wickedoee. But let all remember ooe saying of the saored book, "Be sore your sin will find you out.'' We do not believe the work is finished. Tba seed bave been dropped into good soil, and while many of them have fallen into unproductive toil, many others have fallen into good and honest heart, and will at some future time bring forth fruit unto everlasting life. Yea, others, beside the thirty-one, the immediate result ot tne wore, vuin led to Christ by the work done during the meeting. I L. C. N. C, Feb 16, 1S01. Gentlemen: Having surveyed and examined thd road to Aurora and the proposed short cut through the pocosin. I submit to you the following report, also a rough map, showing the relative position of Newbern, Grantsboro, Bay boro, Htonewall and Aurora. The proposed road should leave the public road at Broad creek church, take up the road leading up Broad creek to Charjes Hoi ton's, thence on to near H. I pock's, thenoe crossing the pocoein about north 58 east to a point on Sand Hill road near W. U. Edwards" d welling. Distance along the public road from Fowler's wharf to Broad creek church, H.6-4 miles; from Fowler's wharf to Grantsboro, 11.24; from Fowler's w harf to Bayboro. 16.12; from Grantsboro to Bayboro. 4 S3; from Grantsboro to Aurora, 15 34; from Fowler's wharf to Aurora, 26 53; air-line north 4Sj east from Fowler's wharf to Aurora. 13.35: Length of road to be made, 7.13. It might be best to lengthen this road 1 of a mile to keep on the best ground. Length through pocosin. 5 50. Distance saved by short cut between Newbern and Aurora, 6.96. Cost of construction wagon road 7.18 miles. 5 5-100 miles, two ditches 3x3 at 6c. per cubic yard. $1161 60; 1 63-100 mile, two ditches 2x2, at 6c. per cubic yard $262 82; 1 mile lead drain. 3x30 at c. per cubic yard, $105.60; cross Smbering 1 mile, 12 feet wide, SS0 00; clearing 7-18 miles, $100.00. Total cost, 61.710 02. Starting at a point on the east side of Neuse river opposite the end of Queen street a railroad passing near Grants boro and on to McCotter's gin. tbence an air-line to Aurora twenty 8-10 miles, could be graded and trestled ready for the ties at cost of S10.500. H. A. Brown, Surveyor. Tho Aurora section is one of the beet in Eastern North Carolina, with fertile soil and timbered lands. It is pros perous and improving fast. Its psople desire close connection with New Berne: New Bemoans desire clcse con nection with them. The above report shows just what will have to be ac complished to secure the proposed road. There will have to be zealous concert of action between the two places to ac complish this purpose. Another meet- ting of the citizens will soon be called to take action upon the report. Let there be a full attendance, a free ex change of opinions and a hearty co operation in whatever is decided upon. Drain the Swamp. Editor Journal: I saw in the Jour nal of the 12th an article giving a few points in regard to cutting a canal from Bryce creek to Neuse river. I have thought for several years that the drain age of those rich swamp lands would be the best thing for Craven county that could happen, and a good thing for the State. The road from Pettipher 's creek by way of Long lake could then be cut. It would be worth to the State a large amount. Three years ago there web an expert sent here by a company from New York on a project, that was to eee what it would cost to make a wagon road from Long lake to the New Berne aitd Beau fort road. The object was to make Long lake a place for summer and winter resort, for hunting aoi fishing and boating. The company said the lake filled the bill in every respect, but no road could be made until the lands were drained. Fish can be caueht every month in the year; wild geese are plentiful in the winter, and deer and bears are very thick. Citizen. We are pleased to tee that a bill was introduced in the Legislature Tuesday to drain the lands referred to by con vict labor. We hope for the sake of the inhabitants of that ceighborhood , for the good that will ensue to thie entire section and the Onslow region adjacent, and to the State itself, that owns most of the lands that will be made valuable by this drainage, that the bill will be passed without oppo sition. surprising Testimony. Many physicians who haveexsmined into the merits of B. B. B. (Botanic Blood Balm), have been confronted with testimony which they deemed surprising, and thus being convinced of it wonderful tffloacy, have not failed to prescribe it in their practice as oc casion required. H. L. Cassidy, Kennejaw, Oa., writes: "For two years my wife was a great sutlerer. Skillful physicians did her no good, tier mouth was one solid ulcer. her body WM broken ont ,n iore, and she lost a beautiful head of halt. Three bottle B. B. B. cared her completely, incredible a it may Bound, and she is now the mother of a healthy three month old baby clear from any scrofu lous taint." A. H. Morria, Pine Bluff, Ark., writes: "Hot Spring and aeveral doctors failed to cure me of several running ulcers on my leg, B. B. B. effected a wonderfully quick cure after everything else had failed." SECOND DAY- LAKdF ATTENDANCE OF VISITORS The Art, Fancy 'ork aud Culitiiirj 1) parlmenls Sp'onilid I'xliibits in All. Yesterday we gave a general outline of what waa t? be seen tt the Fair. Let us cow enter more into details and notice and particularize on some of the articles in tho different depirments. In the northern 100m on the upper, floor is the Art department. When an I admirer of tho beautiful enters here Le is entranced by tho sconeg of loveliners on every hand that entice him to linger and gf.zj again and again from one object to another. Extending from door to door is a fine collection of per- I per traits and drawings ia charcoal cray- j on, oil and water colors, all of which are the work of pup. Is o,' the New Berne Collegiate IcBiitute. They are good enough to have been the woik of experienced adu'.ta. There is a handsome tcreen in this room the frime of which ia mj.de by a New Berne ludy from rhododendron roots gathered at Black Mountain and the lovely panels with its lifelike birds and (lowers are painted by acothi r of our New Berne ladies. Lirge and e!o- gant tapestry paintings adorn the walla in several places. "Esmeralda,"' "Diwn,'' ' Venus rijing from the Bea," and several others ehow artistic skill in a rare degree. There are fine fptcimens of china painting, and neat wood carving. We notice also a pretty glass screen, and numerous other articles thit epirjo for -bids our mentioning. Mr. Edward Oerock makes a hard some display of photographs and cray on and pastel portraits. Among tha Fancy Work there is a charming variety of center tquaree, doylies, splashers, sofa pillows, crazy work quilts etc. There is also some excellent hand-sewing and we notice two pansy sofa pillows that aro very attractive . Miss Hattie Stanly of Rahway, N. J., formerly of this city, exhibits a tasty center square. We p.re glad to Bee that New Bernims do not forget the old town even if they are living at a distance. The crocheting exhibit is very full, embracing almost everything in this line. There are five kiDda of knitting by a lady 77 years old. Tho Culinary department it hand somely decorated viih chaining ever greens, and otherwise made pldisant and attractive. This room is abund antly supplied with things that will make a hungry man's mouth water and yet many of them are wrought into such shapes of beauty that it would be with reluctance one would consent to see their symmetery destroyed even for so useful a purpose, The iced cakes are covered with beauteous designs in net work, figures, and fljwers. There 23 or 30 icsd to perfection. At one corner is a '"pink tea table," the name of which is taken from the coior of the principal edibles upon it. The handsomest cake upon it represents the Fair. Over it is a flag bearing the words "East Carolina Fish, Ovster and Game Fair, 1891.'" The cake itself like the others ia pink, aud It is covered with figures of game, fish and oysters, these however are white. The plain "staff of life'' is not for gotten. There are nice loaves of bread, and as pretty biscuit and rolls as one would wish to see. Placed on shelves in neat array are 65 jarsof choice pickles, 70of preseryes, in nf rnnr1 coeds and 50 classes of jlly and they look delicious enough to tempt an epicure. On the same shelves are exhibits of scuppernong wine from one to twenty-three years old.
