Hall stage for the North Carolina Symphony's concert tonigjit at 8. Peter Perret, conductor of" the Winston-Salem Symphony, will be on the podium to direct the orchestra. Famed violinist Eugene Fodor will perform as guest soloist. Fodor began his musical studies at an early age and made his debut with the Denver Symphony at age 10. His teachers have included Jascha Heifetz and Mischa Mischakoff. Fodor has taken first prize awards in the International Paganini Competition, the Merriweather-Post Competition and the Young Musicians Foundation. Na tional Competition. In 1974, Fodor won the Silver Medal, the highest award ever given to an American musician, in Moscow's Tchaikovsky Competition. No Gold Medal was given that year. . With the N.C. Symphony, Fodor will perform one of the staples of the violin repertoire, Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto in D Major. Brahms composed the violin concerto in 1878. Written shortly after Brahms' Second Symphony, the concerto shares the earlier work's sense of calmness and serenity. The soloist's part holds extreme diffulties, however. The second of the work's three movements is based on an old German folk song, and the final sec tion has echoes of traditional gypsy music. The orchestra also will perform An tonin Dvorak's overture Carnival, Maurice Ravel's suite Ma Mere L'Oye (Mother Goose) and Zoltan Kodaly's Hary Janos Suite. Dvorak's overture, composed in 1891 as the second of three works intended to be performed together under the single ti tle Nature, Life and Love, has been frowned upon by a few critics who find it the least worthwhile of the three. Car nival's sparkling, vigorous orchestration however, has made it a favorite of au diences since its premiere.. The Mother Goose suite began its life in 1908 as a piano duet. Ravel or chestrated the work in 1911, then revised and enlarged the orchestration so it could be staged as a ballet. The work's seperate movements display Ravel's characteristically brillant instrumentation skills. They illustrate in music the fairy tales of French authors Charles Perrault, Next: SILKWOOD (F OURS ALONE IN KINTEK STEREO If EKSITYUZ NORTH CAROLINA'S MOST EXCITING FILM SHOWPLACE "Sequences in this movie will make your jaw drop open out of genuine amazement. . .an utterly absorbing drama a sensory feast!" -David An sen, NEWSWEEK A CARROLL BALLARD FILM NEVER CRY WOL ATRUESTORYms KCnTTEK 3 BEST ACTOR AWARDS 3:00 5:00 7:05 9:10 rl 8r GOLDEN GLOBE NOMS. The suite and opera are famous for opening with a musical imitation of a sneeze; in Hungarian legend any tale prefaced by a sneeze is supposed to be of dubious authenticity. The music in the opera is drawn from Hungarian peasant songs. The adaptation of the pieces for the suite demonstrates the growing sense of or chestral color Kodaly possessed in the 1920s.
