When injuries struck Kelvin Bryant in 1981, Horton stepped in and rushed for 144 yards, including a clutch touchdown against Maryland. Both players returned to action, shared the responsibilities in the Gator Bowl and also shared MVP honors. When Bryant was re-injured in 1982, Horton came to the rescue again, rushing for 576 yards and seven touch downs. He earned MVP honors when the Tar Heels downed Texas in the Sun Bowl. "When I first changed to tailback, I took the idea that I would never get to be a quarterback into consideration," Horton said. "I knew once I changed my mind, that was something I had to stick with.
