APRIL5,2017 10-2 Sports I B1 Windsor Police Dept, searching for suspect BYTHADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Windsor Police are searching for two men allegedly involved in a shooting Sunday. Windsor Police Chief Todd Lane said offi cers were dispatched to a shooting at 1544 Forbes under $12K bond Court appearance was March 29 BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - At 7:20 p.m. Monday, March 27, Offi cer A.J. Lanier and Cpl. Frank Ratzlaff were con ducting a traffic check point on NC 308. Lanier observed a beige Cadillac approach ing the checkpoint, and he asked for the driver's license. The driver advised Lanier he did not have his license in his pos session. While talking to the driver, Lanier could smell the odor of mari juana coming from in side the vehicle. Lanier asked for and was grant ed consent to search the vehicle by the driver. The search revealed not only marijuana in side the vehicle but also two plastic bags con taining what appeared to be cocaine. The driver, Raquell Quavon Forbes, 21, of Greenville was placed under arrest and trans ported to the Bertie County Magistrates Of fice. Forbes was charged with Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance (cocaine) and Possession of Schedule VI Controlled Substance South King St. in Wind sor, where they found a man who had been shot three times. Keaon Matthew Bond, 22, was sitting in a ve hicle parked outside his residence when two men, described as slen der, approached him and tried to open the doors of the vehicle. The suspects then shot into the vehicle, striking the victim three times and fleeing on foot. Bond was transport ed to Vidaiit Bertie Hos pital in Windsor before being transferred to Vi- dant Medical Center in Greenville. In the meantime. Windsor Police offi cers Jessie Mizelle and Naomi Wiggins, who had responded to the scene, requested assis tance from the Ahoskie Police Department’s K-9 Unit. The K-9 officer, Whit by, led officers to a street not far from the scene. Officers Mizelle and Wiggins were able to find a witness who indi cated a small white ve hicle had parked at the location prior to the shooting, and then left at a high rate of speed. Windsor Police Det. Sgt. Justin Jackson is leading the investiga tion of the shooting. OKOBe;?! "m, ^ ? “We are requesting anyone with informa tion on this case to call Sgt. The town of Roxobel hosted its first Ag Fes tival this past Saturday, April 1. The event included a parade, entertainers, vendors, a 5K and fun for all ages. “We are excited to have the number of people show up to be a part of the event and enjoy the parade, ven dors and more. We were blessed to have such beautiful weather,” said Roxobel Ag Festival Committee Member Johnna Browne Lewis. It had been many years since Roxobel has had a parade. According to Lewis, There were many com pliments on the enter tainment. It was a weekend full of adventure for sev eral children from east ern North Carolina. The Roanoke/Cashie Youth Dream Team hosted several children for a turkey hunt this past weekend. Friday night the chil dren, their families and the members of the organization met for dinner, a review of gun safety and target prac tice. The turkey hunt coor dinator Jonathan Stalls welcomed everyone to the event. Stalls reviewed gun safety rules with the children and then the guidelines for shooting a turkey. After Stalls had re viewed the rules, the; children of the hunt Madi Hall, Gavin Booth, Gunner Speller, James Holliday and Cayden Summerlin were each paired with a guide. WINDSOR -New ambu lances received. Bertie County took delivery of four new ambulances on Tues day, April 4 to support paramedic emergency medical services. The new ambulances will continue the coun ty’s effort to ensure re sponse readiness for the highest level of pre hospital medical care for all citizens in Bertie County on a 24-hour a day, seven days a week basis. These ambulances will be based at the current EMS squad locations in Aulander, Colerain and Windsor. The Windsor location is based temporarily at the Bertie Early College campus. The Bertie County Board of Commission ers secured United States Department of Agriculture Rural De velopment financing in August 2016. The loan amount was $788,000 with a fifteen- year repayment term at 2.75 percent interest to cover the costs for the cab, chassis, rear medi cal unit, all equipment such as stretchers, heart monitors, lights, siren and radios.
